Peggy Noonan on Clooney's speech

"George Clooney has a canny respect for the Hollywood establishment, for its executives and agents, and treats his audience as if it were composed of his intellectual and artistic inferiors. (He is not alone in this. He is only this year's example.)

And because they are his inferiors, he must teach them. He must teach them about racial tolerance and speaking truth to power, etc. He must teach them to be brave. And so in his acceptance speech for best supporting actor the other night he instructed the audience about Hollywood's courage in making movies about AIDS, and recognizing the work of Hattie McDaniel with an Oscar.

The Clooney generation in Hollywood is not writing and directing movies about life as if they've experienced it, with all its mysteries and complexity and variety. In an odd way they haven't experienced life; they've experienced media. Their films seem more an elaboration and meditation on media than an elaboration and meditation on life. This is how he could take such an unnuanced, unsophisticated, unknowing gloss on the 1950s and the McCarthy era. He just absorbed media about it. And that media itself came from certain assumptions and understandings, and myths."

We republicans have been trying really really hard to cloud the truth about the McCarthy era. And that mean old George Clooney insists on telling the truth. What a jerk!

She doesn't point to any specific instances where "Good Night and Good Luck" was not accurate. Just complains that it was a myth because it was made by a Hollywood liberal.

is that rather than have an actor portray McCarthy, he used the actual footage. And contemporary audiences, like the citizens of that era, can see that after being criticized by Murrow, McCarthy revealed himself to be a frightened, drunken blowhard.

I had a boss a few years ago who passed out a piece of literature about how the Oscars were a pagan celebration of their false idol (the statue) and ...well it went on and on about Godless Communist Hollywood. It was quite amazing.

HE makes a 45 second speech and she must have spent DAYS working up her response to it.

As noted elsewhere in this thread-seeing McCarthy for real (I haven't seen the film but I have seen footage) is quite an eye opener that cements his reputation as a complete whack job. Glad he is very dead.

Lest we forget that our friend Coulter had most of a book about how RIGHT McCarthy was that was out just a few years ago. Revisionist desperate revisionist history.

people pay attention to Hollywood and sports celebrities. Look at how they trip over themselves trying to sign up any asshole celebrity that says he/she is a Republican and wants to run for public office.

Now name one sports or Hollywood celebrity that has won the Democratic nomination for a state or national office. I can't think of any though there might be one or two. It is simply amazing. Not to mention the fact that our current president got to where he is mainly because of being the son of a president.
