The hallmark of the USA was that our Civilian sat above the military.
Now there changing this right in front of our eyes.

6. Geez! These guys have more 'committees' and 'subcommittees'
than a university!!!

Pretty scary with changing the NG, though. No doubt Republican governors would support it wholeheartedly so they can shift any responsibility from their state to the feds. :banghead:

12. Don't be so sure
The Governors like the NG as "their" Army:

    1. It is a heck of a lot cheaper to have the NG on stand by for natural disasters then to have to staff up with full time, salaried (with pension, health insurance, post retirement health insurance liabilities) fire fighters, cops, and rescue medics at he same level. I was told by a California National Guard Colonel that an NG Member costs about 15% of a full time cop, fire fighter, or rescue medic.

    2. In my birth state, after a pissing contest/vendetta between the Governor and the Federal Prosecutor over "kick backs" from highway contractors doing snow removal work, the Governor switched the snow removal backup from Out-Sourced Private Contractors to a (Voluntary) National Guard Blizzard Cadre

    3. The NG is a source of cheap political patronage (E6-7-8-9, W1,2,3,4, O5-6-General, and flight school.).

    4. The feds should only be able to touch the State NG for two (maybe three) things:

      a) An armed attack on the US
      b) "Mutual Assistance" for a Natural Disaster elsewhere in the US
Maybe, Just Maybe - Exconus Catastrophic Natural Disasters - there's a certain personality type that gets a "High" from Disaster Assistance.
but no pre-emptive wars of choice.

11. Yup - did you hear Mc Hale
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 11:22 AM by slaveplanet
he said you have MAJOR and CATASTROPHIC disasters, HE considers KATRINA on the LOW end of CATASTROPHIC and that they need to be funded and run exercises for HIGH end CATASTROPHIC disasters.

14. Do you know what a catastrophic disaster is
Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 11:53 AM by Coastie for Truth
Go to -- and - a 7+ would be a catastrophic event. Ten times worse then Loma Prieta.

(I live between the San Andreas Fault and the Hayward-Calaveras Fault - in the Guadalupe River-Coyote Creek Flood Plain and Liquefaction Zone -- it's called "Silicon Valley" - and FEMA won't do crap for us.)

15. I was in
Palo Alto when the 8.1 Loma Prieta quake struck.
The 8.1 would be what McHale was referring to
as a MAJOR disaster.

He went on to explain that there is a whole other stage of classification such as catastrophic, it was in this classification in which he placed Katrina. He very clearly placed Katrina at the Low end of the catastrophic disaster. Which means they're expecting things that dwarf Katrina.

I agree that Fema won't do crap.

16. If you're still in CA
Have you considered affiliating with Citizens Corps CERT - and your local Red Cross and/or Salvation Army -- as well as getting a Ham License and affiliating with - there is no such thing as FEMA - it is a Fed excuse for inaction.

10. Sending the NG to Iraq
was borderling unconstitutional to begin with. This is a really bad idea.

The NG was always a first responder in emergencies, part of why Katrina was so bad, the state had no resources. It's also the states first line of defense against a federal coup. Time to get back a few states rights.

17. And bushco's answer is always "give us more power, more money"
More secrecy. More privatization of the national interests. Trust us. We've done such a fine job so far. Nothing bad would have happened if we just had had more power, more money, more secrecy.
