WASHINGTON - Not since Watergate, when GOP congressional leaders told Richard Nixon they would vote him from office if he didn't resign, have Capitol Hill Republicans challenged their President like this.
The intramural rebellion against the White House over the Dubai ports deal, however, has been building since the early days of the Bush presidency.

Several factors are behind the extraordinary spectacle of senior GOP legislators, led by House Speaker Dennis Hastert, openly challenging the leader of their party on an issue of national security:


Self-preservation.

Bush has run his last race, but the midterm elections are less than eight months away, and Republicans are jittery about their prospects. Distancing themselves from a polarizing President whose job approval rating hits 40% on a good day is shrewd electoral positioning.

Payback time.

Republicans have seethed for years over what they consider insulting and arrogant treatment at the hands of Bush's lieutenants.

The Repugs have made their bed, now let them lie in it. They have allowed Bush to compromise the Constitution of the United States, jeopardize the security of our nation, remove our rights and civil liberties, cut deals for his cronies, and now they hope they can save face and get reelected in November.

If there's a God in Heaven, they will all be looking for something else to do after the mid-terms.

They'll be busy with court appearances, picking up litter, washing prison uniforms, etc.

Yes, I've always wondered why Republicans just followed his lead no matter how badly he treated them and their principles. (Harriet Miers, guest workers, etc.)

You have to correct this when you see it. Frist was pissed off that Schumer even dared to bring up an amendment to stop the Dubai Ports Deal

Remember it was DEMOCRATS who pressed the issue in the Senate

and they're once again attempting to blow smoke up all of the skirts!

Bullshit! They've had six years to do something about that. Every heard of "oversight", boys?

The only 'payback' with this is Bush allowing it so that he can look like a schmuck and keep a Republian Rubber Stamp through to the end of his term! :grr:
