Citing new laws, church halts funeral pickets in some states

TULSA, Okla. — A small Kansas church known for its anti-gay protests said Wednesday that it has stopped picketing for now at soldiers’ funerals in states with new laws against the practice.

“We’re not going to get arrested. We obey the law,” said Shirley Phelps-Roper, a lawyer and member of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, headed by her father, the Rev. Fred Phelps.

Westboro Baptist has outraged mourning communities across the nation by showing up at soldiers’ funerals. Members of the congregation contend that soldiers are being struck down by God for defending a nation that tolerates homosexuality.

In response, several states have passed or considered legislation restricting when and where pickets may demonstrate at funerals.

Phelps-Roper said the group will eventually protest in states with the new laws, but it will find a way to obey the new laws.

I understand, however, that my post might have been misconstrued. I was meaning a church of the Christian faith, not necessarily a church in the particular denomination that calls itself Christian.

Just reading about Phelps feels like I'm being punished.

As a side note, you can always tell you're on the right side of the argument when your leader is most famous for harrassing widows and beating the shit out of his kids.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's dreadful that Phelps targeted servicemen and women like that.

But it's as if nobody with the power to bring forth these measures much gave a crap when Phelps was only harrassing "fag" families.

yeah its been a grim last 6 years... got to find humor in that or the terrorist win (in this case the terrorist are the Bush regime).

But I am glad to see him stop at least for awhile, whatever the reason.

The minute he starts protesting soldiers funerals everyones up in arms and passing laws to stop him. Where in the HELL were all these people for "decency" the last 10+ years he has been terrorizing the gay community? Since when is a dead soldier worth more respect than a 21 year old gay man that was basically crucified on a fence and left to die in his tears?

Where were/are the democrats and republicans when my community was/is terrorized constantly by this monster?
