2. I've got it working on two computers now
I wonder if it's possible to download it onto the terminals at the public library and get it to work quietly in the background?

Or, on the other hand, convince the library to allow it to be installed.

Imagine if every library computer in the country were running this!

4. Not sure if they can do that. They have to stay neutral in all
issues, no matter how noble the cause. They would have to get permission from the city to run such a client. It would be great to have cities running their own teams.

Write your friends and urge them to join.

9. I hear you!
I live in Kansas. We lost power yesterday due to a sudden storm with tornadic winds. Kansas University, across town, is closed today with damage to 60% of the buildings. One junior high, a few blocks from me, lost its air conditioning units when they were ripped off the roof and blown into the parking lot below. We still have helicopters flying overhead surveying damage which keep freaking out the dogs.

Here's a link to a post containing some pictures my brother took yesterday. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=153&topic_id=4422&mesg_id=4422

We spent part of this morning helping to do neighborhood clean-up. We got power back yesterday morning but the people across the street from me didn't get theirs until early this morning. We almost never turn off our computers but we have been lately. In fact, we unplugged them completely a couple of times yesterday.

11. It could be a nasty tornado season. The gulf is already heating
up, so that could mean real trouble come the summer.

Looks like the neighborhood with be alive with the sound of chain saws for the next few weeks.

22. That's what we're afraid of
The city crews and neighborhoods were out in force today. The city is pretty cleaned up. I'm amazed. I had to drive across town today and most of the larger debris has been pulled off the street and removed or stacked for removal. We live near where they park the majority of city vehicles overnight so they had to clear the debris to get the equipment across town. We're also near a few major (for our town) streets so that also helped in getting the area around here cleaned fairly quickly.

I awoke to the sound of chainsaws and it continued most of the day. Believe me, I'd rather hear chainsaws than the howling wind that woke me up Sunday morning.

LOL, my neighborhood is great. Before the electricity came back on (at least on our side of the block) one of my neighbors had pulled out a camp stove and made coffee for everyone. People brought out food (cold cuts, bread, etc.) and helped feed people who stopped by to help clean up our neighborhood. I don't want to say it was like a party, especially considering the amount of damage around here, but we made the best of it. The kids were especially fun. They were picking up small things and alerting adults if there was something with nails. We made them go on the porch after we started finding roofing with nails in it. Thankfully the stuff with nails was in a small area.

We knew most of our neighbors by sight before the storm and we would always give them an obligatory wave but we certainly got to know them a lot better the past couple of days. Now I'll feel a lot more comfortable about waving and saying "hi" to my neighbors.

Anyway, now that I've replaced the burned out cable that hosed my internet connection after a brownout this afternoon, I'm back to folding.

19. I second that, but some people are motivated by competition
and exploiting that competitive spirit for a good cause is OK to a degree.

To get through the next hundred teams is going to take a lot more CPU's, and that will take time. We got the most motivated people already, and from here on out we will grow slowly.

I do it for the good it is doing, and for building community. Everybody has their reasons for helping. I'm just happy people are helping no matter what the reason.

DU rules! I always knew we were a better forum than Slashdot anyway.

Now we can prove it by Folding their ass off. ;-)

Another interesting data point is we're within three months of taking down the Microsoft team. Heady stuff there.

Keep Folding for DU! I have five CPUs up and running 24/7.

Check out this chart of Team DU progress at

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_summary.php?s=&t=48157

We have seen ~30% decline in daily production. I wonder what is going on?

In total, we are doing well (384th place). We already passed up IBM, and soon will take down Debian and Intel. How cool is that? We need more DU CPUs!

and within the past couple of weeks we got some big WUs to crunch. As a result it doesn't look like we have been as productive but the truth is we are still folding away - slower but higher points.

BTW, I just made the 3,000 club and my husband (folder Lebowski) is still moving up and almost ready (currently 352/400) to get another WU.

56. Instructions enclosed (first draft)...
... please let me know if there are any errors or glaring omissions.

How to create an automatic Folding@Home forum signature

The instructions below help you to set up a forum signature image that displays your F@H statistics. This requires a little HTML knowledge. The statistics are updated automatically every hour.
  1. Go to www.dynasig.net and create a free account. All they need is an e-mail address (I haven't received any junk e-mail on the account that I used, so I trust them). The free account limits you to one signature.
  2. Once you login, click on Edit Folding@Home Profile in the Control Panel. Enter your F@H Username and DU's team# 48157 (leave the Statistics Page set to 1).
  3. Go back to the Control Panel and click on Create Signature. Now the fun starts! There are a few background images you can choose for your signature and some basic text controls. The selection of F@H variables you can display is quite limited, but covers the basics. Unfortunately, the only way I have found to get a 2-column layout is to choose a monospaced font and insert the HTML escape code for a space "& n b s p ;" (without the spaces) repeatedly until the text lines up. This will require the occasional tweak as the stats change. Primitive, huh? I strongly recommend that you save your text into a text editor or word processing document, as the multiple spaces get stripped out by the website when editing.
My current configuration is described below. All text is set to the monospaced font "Comic Sans MS". The terms in brackets are the F@H variables I selected.

Once you are happy with your signature, copy the part of the HTML code they provide on-screen: just the characters from "http" through ".gif" inclusive. Paste these characters into your DU profile signature field.

I personally prefer the F@H signature generated by the Extreme Overclocking site, but unfortunately the DU forum software doesn't support the type of image link it produces.

58. Thanks, corporate_mike. I appreciate it.
Credit for my interest in F@H stats signatures goes to DUer Vox_Reason who posted in Thread #8 about the stats sig image page at Extreme Overclockers.

This is an example of the type of stats sig image they can do (it can be customised). For people that like to monitor their F@H statistics, Extreme Overclockers also do kick-ass F@H stats pages.

Regarding the instructions, I may have overcomplicated how to insert multiple spaces to create columnar text. I think you can just lean on the spacebar to line things up instead of using the HTML escape code for a non-breaking space character. However, the recommendation to save text to another document still stands.

I would like to see other peoples' design ideas for their stats sigs using DynaSig. My current one was just the first that didn't make my eyes cross too much. Design isn't my strong suit.

72. Recruitment... Recruitment... Recruitment.
That's the answer now. I've been saying "Each One, Recruit One" here on DU for a while now...meaning each DUer recruit One Other.

That's "tip of the iceberg". This evening, I sent out a letter to ten of my liberal friends, to many of whom I provide computer support at No Cost. In the letter, I'm asking them to join our efforts here.

I'll report back on responses.

Go thou and do likewise. :)

In fact, I called her office earlier today about her opponent buying a house from a DeLay front group at below market value (ala Duke Cunningham). Whenever I've done this things in the past I put out things like blank voter registration forms and materials for local groups as part of my networking project. In addition to the usual materials I'll also print up/out the DU mission statement, F@H materials and how to sign up for the DU folding team. Hopefully I'll get some recruits for both. It's definitely worth a shot.

81. In the last week my production has gone up
Way up. Check it out http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_summary.php?s=&u=174657 Up til last week I was cranking out one or two units a week. Last week I did four. A WU uploaded this morning and got a new one. I'm cruising through it and I'm due to finish tomorrow. If this keeps up I'll double my previous output. Maybe it's because the WUs I've gotten lately are smaller but I don't remember finishing units this quickly before. The only explanation I have for it is I cleaned up my C drive last week. My C drive was getting pretty full but my D drive still had a lot of space. I moved some of my larger and less frequently used folders onto D. Hmmm. I should have done this a long time ago.

I'm also thinking there are a couple of other folders I can move off the C drive. Anything to help up the numbers.

84. I think I figured it out
It was late last night when I was "thinking" :eyes:. I just realized that I also disabled some start-up programs that I didn't use and really didn't need to be running when I moved the folders over to the D drive last week. For instance, I found out that WinFax was running continuously in the background. I rarely use it so I killed it. There was also some Netscape program (view manager) that was running all the time. I killed it too. I think this the reason my machine is running faster. I've got less clutter going on. It's amazing what a good night's sleep and two pots of coffee will do to my mental acuity.

90. Warning to Linux folders re: FAHcore78.exe & Project 2401...
...there seems to be a problem with project p2401 _Ribo_indole and the FAHcore78.exe in that it triggers the error message "Core is not present or corrupted", downloads FAHcore78.exe again (which is the same as the one that caused the error) and keeps doing this in a loop. This problem may be limited to AMD processors.

The only solution seems to be manually downloading a Beta version of FAHcore78.exe (link goes to the FAQ article "Downloading FAH Core files manually" on www.fahwiki.net). Unfortunately, this beta core runs very, very slowly (90 minutes to do 1% of a 250,000 step project), but it seems to be the only way to break out of the loop.

I hope this helps. Our two poor little Linux boxes are struggling through this project.
