1. Ignore it all.

You can't prevent hurricanes, bird flu, and terra lerts. Just learn to live around them.

If you are seriously worried about mad cow, don't eat beef. If you live in a tornado or hurricane area, pay attention to forecasts. But, whatever you do, don't listen to the fearmongers. Fear accomplishes nothing.

there's going to be a code red terror allert, too. not because there's any real threat of terrorism, just to drown out the news about the anti-war protest marches in new york. it's so wonderful to live in this country...:sarcasm:

5. There's also a movie coming out this weekend: V for Vendetta
"People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people"

3. I've got a friend who reacts to everything like its the end of the world
Every time the idiots at the WH decide to ratchet up the fear, and everytime the media highlights some potential disaster or disease he freaks.

They have some of us at the breaking point, and they know this. They set out to bleed the budget dry of money for regular appropriations for social committments and basic needs and they've managed to make it okay for the rich and the corps. and a disaster for everyone else. Lots of stress among the helpless. Doesn't help when your news sources are limited.

He still tells me every time I see him that Bush is going to extend his term. He's terrified by this.

4. As H.L. Mencken said:
"The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."

6. don't let em yank your chain
how many have ever died in all of time and human history of mad cow? how many of bird flu who didn't work in the poultry industry? for that matter, to be crass, how many of the tornados? the oil was supposed to have run out a couple decades ago but somehow didn't happen, and don't forget y2K and all the computers were gonna turn on us and bite our ass

some of these catastrophes, your odds are pretty good

there are real catastrophes like katrina, but again, living in fear won't turn aside even one little spin-up tornado from even the smallest hurricane

so might as well refuse to be afraid

Hell, I'm scared shitless of some weather, but I'm with you all these damn warnings, alerts, I just refuse to be afraid of shit like that anymore. I reserve my fear for tornados, they've proven they're bad mfers.
