93. Thanks for that.
If it was intentional, the guy certainly wasn't trying to be obvious.
He's either well-practiced at surreptitiously flipping the bird, or he was tired and not paying attention to his actions.

I vote well-practiced. Keith Olberman should get this.

He looked around to see who might see him.

Does anyone know who he is? I suppose he is either an aid or Senate employee, either way, he should be dismissed for such action.

31. I Doubt It Highly.
Though I can't rule it out, from what I saw on video it looked like it was far more logical to be benign. THe man had no emotional reaction whatsoever, and the finger is angled anywhere near Russ. I myself when catch myself leaning on my hand like that all the time, and then after a while get self conscious thinking "I hope no one thinks I'm giving them the finger". But when I do it, I do it innocently and out of comfort and habit, not for anything vulgar.

I would say with 99% confidence this man was doing it innocently as well and wasn't giving anyone the finger.

Sorry :(

36. That's Ok. A Lot Of People Wanted To Think * Flipped Off The Media That
time too, but it was just his thumb. I understand many will believe it was done with vulgar intent, and I can't blame them. I just know that when I watched the video for myself the vibe I got was that it was completely benign. As I said, the finger isn't even angled anywhere near Russ, so if it was with intent, why wouldn't you believe it was to whomever may have been sitting a few seats down to his left? I would think it was completely innocent. If some are to believe it wasn't, then they should also believe that it wasn't to Russ, but to someone off camera since the finger is no where nears pointed towards Russ.

47. I was was one of the 'thumb people' too
But this is different. What you call 'benign' I call passive aggressive. He KNEW he was on camera. He flipped the finger as subtly as he could. Any negative facial expression would give it away. He did it right after Feingold mentioned 'to control the abuses of government' and then addressed Bush with 'Mr. President.'

This was the finger. No doubt this time.

He didn't have to go all Johnny Cash to get his point across to his buddies. But it's subtle enough that he can claim exactly what you are claiming. Mind games baby, mind games.

Your own words:

"As I Watched It Didn't Seem To Point Anywhere Near Him!"

The fingers were attached to his head. Of course he isn't going to take his hand off his head to flip the guy off. That would defeat the whole purpose of his stealth flip-off. The guy clearly perks up, puts the bird on his face and glares over at Russ not once but twice.

the eyes.

I hope in the future you will be able to discern the difference.

I never said he didn't look at him. You'd expect somebody in the chamber to every so often look at the guy actually speaking, wouldn't you? LOL

What I DID say, is that the FINGER itself doesn't angle anywhere near Russ. There is a thread now with an additional video that is supposed to make the OP's point further, but I think it is even more apparent and logical proof that this was nothing but innocent.

Just my opinion though, I'm just trying to spare some from the embarassment of passing this on, if it does come out without reasonable doubt that it was obviously innocent. (like if it turns out the guy was Russ's aide or something lol)

82. Your body language reading score is minus 10
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 07:09 PM by NJCher
As they say, don't quit your day job, because you'll never make it reading body language.

Some people are just clueless about body language and you're obviously one of them. But hey, it's OK! :)

I happen to be very good at reading body language and it is amazing to me that you can't see this man is seething with resentment. He's not bored. He's angry, but he's trying to hide it.

I'm sure that tonight he's with some of his other juvenile 30-something repuke buddies, chortling about this at a DC Happy Hour.

The basic problem with republicans is they are unable to achieve emotional maturity. This actually is a somewhat important instance because it vividly shows how immature they can be.

Yes, this is a gesture that people often use in meetings or to prop up their heads but they use the forefinger on the face, not the middle finger. Rarely, if ever the middle finger. Everyone in this culture knows what it means and sensible, mature people will not risk being misunderstood.

Cher

edited to add: OperationMindCrime, look at your own screen name. You have it in all caps. Do you not know that caps on the I'net means you are "screaming?" Are you oblivious to online body language, too?

Seriously--I don't mean to insult you but really, you don't get it.

Sorry there Mrs ruler of body language, but I disagree with you wholeheartedly. Not only do I find you wrong in your own assessment, but I am quite capable of deciphering body language for myself and am competent to do so. To each their own analysis I guess.

As far as your empty attempt and psychoanalyzing me, well that was even more hilarious!

I have one reason and one reason only for the caps. A reason that comes in handy each and every day on DU. I did it to make my SN easier to find when I scroll down the post list at the top of each thread. Works like a charm, and I love it.

So no, he wasn't giving anybody the finger. Sorry! :)

96. thanks, you just proved my point
Nothing like damning yourself in your own words.

You just said you would rather send the wrong message to other posters (I'M SHOUTING!) than take advantage of the many other easier ways to find your own post on a thread. In other words, it's all about you and your needs and not what kind of a message you're conveying to others.

99. Here's more--laugh yourself sick
When you incorrectly spell words--common ones, like "malarkey"--you convey an unwritten message that you are not very well educated.

100. I'd Blow You Away In That Contest But Who Really Cares. LOL The Problem
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 05:47 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
is that you have such little to say in response that your only alternative was to find one misspelled word typed at 7:16 in the morning within 10 minutes of my being awake. Unfortunately, picking out one misspelled word and using that as substance for argument is the absolute weakest stance an opponent can take when it comes right down to it. It shows they had to resort to that logic because they had nothing of wit to come back with. I think you will find the overwhelming majority of DU'ers agree with that notion. So when it comes to unwritten messages conveying a lack of intellect there aren't many that can top using spelling as the counterpoint. With all due respect, of course. :hi:

62. I'm going to be a contrarian here
But I've watched it several times, I've slowed it down, tried pausing repeatedly and it looks as likely as not that he is resting his head on TWO fingers, (his index finger and his middle finger) which is a pretty natural way of resting your head. Its not 100 percent clear, but his demeanor etc doesn't suggest to me that he was flipping anyone the bird. IMHO.

onenote
