My 8th grade daughter's poem for an assignment I HAVE THE BEST DAUGHTER
This war is pointless

We aren’t in the right place

There is no reason that all of these men and women should die

If things keep going how they are now, our friends, and boyfriends, and us too, we’ll have to fight

Yes, it was their choice

But it wont be our choice

And yes, its honorable to die for your country

But, why?

Why do our people have to fight for a cause that’s not even defined?

We are just there to be there and make things go boom

Their innocent people are dieing too

Stupid weapons of mass destruction

WHAT weapons of mass destruction?

Is their any proof that we need to be there?

Is there any proof?

Is there any proof?

Is there any proof?

Were they the ones that blew up our twin towers?

NO

So why shouldn’t we be there, here or over there

Why did we not receive any support when we/he asked?

Did they see a reason?

Did they see a reason?

Did they see a reason?

If they had, don’t you think they would have helped?

Why aren’t their children fighting?

They are American and above age, are they not?

Why aren’t his daughters’ boyfriends fighting?

Better yet what are they doing to help?

Sitting on their asses all day

writing, no having other people write “well written bullshit” speeches to try to keep his people, his blind followers following

Though not entirely possible, we are being lead to hell on earth

Maybe, just maybe they knew what was about to happen, planning

Maybe they knew

Maybe, they knew

Maybe, they knew

Its pointless

2. she was worried about her using those couple of swear words
I told her that usually I would be, but in this instance it was true

3. omg that's beautiful
tell her that she should enter it in a contest. wait...i'm working on a subversive pamphlet/newspaper that i'm going to distribute around town/campus (i'm a sophomore in college) on April 2. can you ask her if i can include it in the "words of truth" section next to the 'reccomended books'?

6. i don't know her name anyway.. anonymous 8th grader in Kansas!
tell her i said thanks. here's a wierd poem by me:
16311.1

I pretend the pain is hunger when I wake
Try to eat despite the sickening truth
Fury channeled into crushing, grinding my teeth
Feeling I can do little else, and I leave
There, down the hall, comes that girl
The giggly almost-freind from journalism class
Asks what's wrong and wants to help
So I pretend that the problem is stomach pain
'Others have it worse than you' she says by
means of advice; I smile but want to scream
'That's the problem! Wake up! That's the problem!'

And home I head for the Advil, pretend the pain is a cramp
but decide on a more honest
self-diagnosis
of the pain. 'What's wrong, doctor?' I ask myself.
The symptoms are nausea, for the truth is nausiating
And insomnia, for the truth does not let one sleep at night
And headaches and watery eyes and horror
'Sounds like you've got the symptoms.'
The disease is awareness
The only cure is change
Yeah, you won't get no peace
till you change the world
Yeah, I ain't gonna sleep
till the world wakes up.

Wake up; wake up, world, people are dying
Ignorance is bliss, so the world leaves them crying
But sadly I have the disease called awareness
And the cure is revolution.
Won't get no peace
Until the disease spreads
I won't get no sleep
till the world wakes up
to revolution rising

8. I told her that if her teacher was a bushbot, she might get a
bad grade.

she said she didn't care because she just wrote the truth.

I told her exactly and to stand by her convictions.

then I told her to call me if she got in trouble. :)

19. It is a great poem
but the swear words were a very bad idea. It gives licence to a conservative teacher to mark the poem down and may even make a liberal one do so. I presume standards as to acceptable language are given at the beginning of the class and include not using swear words. She could have used astricks or comic strip symobols and had the same effect.

she is not opposed to taking them out, but felt strongly about how deep it hurts

I literally can't envision, and I teach high school, being able to get by with that.

22. I dont' think it is really liberal, just HUGE
we have 52 elementary, 24 Middle and 12 High schools

we pretty much have free reign if we are doing what is right

unless a parent calls then we get hounded

26. That is quite a daughter you have, there, greenbriar!
I love her poem, and I hope she feels good about herself for her talent. My daughter wrote a lot of poetry when she was in middle and high school, and some of it was just astoundly good.

Kudo's to your daughter!
