Feingold Draws Little Support for Censure
Democrats distanced themselves Monday from Wisconsin Sen. Russell Feingold's effort to censure
President Bushover domestic spying. The White House hit back at the same time, Vice President
Dick Cheneytelling a fundraiser in Feingold's home state that the resolution was an "outrageous proposition."

As the crowd in De Pere, Wis., booed Feingold's effort, Cheney said, "Don't hold back." Feingold's fellow Democrats did just that Monday, with several saying they wanted first to see the Senate Intelligence Committee finish an investigation of the warrantless wiretapping program that Bush authorized as part of his war on terrorism.

Asked at a news conference whether he would vote for the censure resolution, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada declined to endorse it and said he hadn't read it. Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., said he had not read it either and wasn't inclined simply to scold the president.

"I'd prefer to see us solve the problem," Lieberman told reporters. Across the Capitol, reaction was similar. Feingold's resolution drew empathy but no outright support from Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi "understands Senator Feingold's frustration that the facts about the NSA domestic surveillance program have not been disclosed appropriately to Congress," her office said in a statement. "Both the House and the Senate must fully investigate the program and assign responsibility for any laws that may have been broken."

9. Did you even fucking read the article? They base this on a statement...
...by Reid saying he hasn't read it yet, and some mealymouthed diahrrea from Holy Joe Lieberman.

Of course, it's the Corporate Media saying this so it MUST be true. :eyes:

WILL vote for it? It'd be nice if Feingold wasn't standing there all alone.

10. Good
That makes me feel better. I know it won't pass, but it'd be nice if it picked a lot of the more courageous Democrats.

7. Not that complicated
Bush wiretapped without a warrant when the law requires that he get a warrant. What is there to investigate? Why are dems such wimps?

14. actually, censures are supposed to come after investigations. The problem
Edited on Mon Mar-13-06 05:55 PM by blm
is that the damn GOP controlled senate won't follow through on any investigation, so some of this has to be made up as they go along. Can't make it easy for any senator.

13. Call your Senators, sure.
But Russ should have built up support for this before he did it. If the vote is like 85-15 that looks horrible.

18. Yes I read it.
I am talking about Democrats who have an opportunity to speak out in favor of of Feingold's resolution, but apparently did not. Saying they sympathize with him - but not taking a stand doesn't cut it for me. Of course, the official vote has not happened yet - so I will reserve my final judgement.

20. WHAT opportunity to speak out??
You're talking about the Corporate Whore Media. They asked TWO - count 'em, TWO - Dems for comment. And NEITHER - not even LIEBERMAN - said they opposed it.

He would have had a clue that Mercury is Retrograde in Pisces until March 25.

Classique Bad Timing.

Say what you will, those Republicon astrologers knew their shit.

As my beloved old Penobscot Grannie used to say: "Don't fight against the river. There is a time for everything, and the starkeepers know the signs."

21. Has anyone heard Reid's actual comments at the press conference?
I'm curious - this article says he won't vote for it and hasn't read it (yet?). That's a far cry from outright opposition to Feingold's underlying point that the President broke the law and needs to be held accountable. Don't buy the spin until we have more context. I think Pelosi's response is what Feingold's realistically hoping for - Dems saying "he's right, and he has a right to be frustrated. We'd like to see the Senate Intelligence Committee finish its job expeditiously and take appropriate action once their investigation is complete."
