They can always say "Everything was going along great and then civil war broke out. No one could ever have imagined that civil war would break out."

3. they want civil war so the people won't unite against THEM
-- the mosque bombings were extremely helpful for BushCo, just like 9-11 was.

5. Originally, I think they didn't want a civil war. Not that they cared
that much about what happened to the Iraqi people, but it would have been much better for PR here at home if a democracy, even a faux one, had worked. Now, they're looking for an exit and for something to shift focus off of everything that's going wrong in the US. Maybe if there's a civil war, they'll try some really ugly spin along the line of, "those Arabs are a bunch of freedom-hating crazy fuckers, we did our best but they didn't want to be free".

There are days when I wonder if *'s brilliant "withdrawal strategy" is to stick it out until all of our soldiers are dead.

8. Masking the true U.S. casualty count & the "collateral" Iraqi deaths fits
your hypothesis. The Vietnam debacle showed the propaganda machine's tactic must include how much blood is spilt for OIL. Noam Chomsky, you're so prescient...because you are such an astute student of U.S. history.

6. The U.S. wants U.S. bases in Iraq, for OIL company access to our OIL.
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 02:42 PM by Sparkman
If that's not abundantly clear, explain the U.S. support around the world, of dictators, and at one point even Saddam Husein himself and even the Taliban in Afghanistan. As long as the economics works to our corporations' short term benefit.

7. Creative destruction is our middle name
*Check out this quote from key neo-con theoretician Michael Ledeen, of the American Enterprise Institute:

"Creative destruction is our middle name, both within our own society and abroad. We tear down the old order every day, from business to science, literature, art, architecture, and cinema to politics and the law. Our enemies have always hated this whirlwind of energy and creativity, which menaces their traditions (whatever they may be) and shames them for their inability to keep pace. Seeing America undo traditional societies, they fear us, for they do not wish to be undone. They cannot feel secure so long as we are there, for our very existence -- our existence, not our politics -- threatens their legitimacy. They must attack us in order to survive, just as we must destroy them to advance our historic mission."

10. "which menaces their traditons" , rationalization of every fallen EMPIRE!
What a trite formula for self-destruction. The art of today has plenty of cutting edge challanges to the true status quo...that of the power structure elite, the RW neo-cons.
Look at the latest in string theory, advancing Einstein's unified field theory...MULTIPLE UNIVERSES and a billions of years old origin of the universe, which fly's in the face & challanges the fundamentals of the current interpretation of creationism. Just who's hanging on to what?
Just who is depending upon expendable human life, rationalizing blood for oil?
Just who is willing to demolish the environment...refusing to accept global warming & the cost of corporate pollution?
These neo-cons are in a fantasy world, that science and political tolerance refute.

9. yeah they are making this happen
They have even successfully divided Muslims into differnt factions. I saw the Code-Pink organization on Democracy now last week when they had a few women they had brought over form Iraq (well the one the administration would let in the country). The Iraqi women stated that they where Muslim and that Iraq was all together and where quite surprised to learn that they had been divided up into different faction fighting for Iraq. They went on to say that it was the Bush administration and the media pushing the Civil War.

11. remember the talking points:"It's up to the Iraqis now" and
"Iraqis need to stand up and fight for their own country now" "Iraqis need to take over this fight so troops can come home"

well, the US invades a country for no reason - murders, imprisons, and tortures their people for no reason and then makes the claim that it's up to the victims of US crimes to get their country under control...

So does anyone really think the US wouldn't welcome a civil war and use it as a cover story?

It's just another way to blame the Iraqis instead of going after the criminals that invaded a country for nothing.

12. Does a civil war in Iraq
allow US forces to stay or push US forces out of Iraq? What do you think happens if a full-blown civil war breaks out? Do US forces run into the Syrian Desert and the Kurdish foothills of the Zagros Mtns? Do you believe the Admin claims that the timetable was for only 30,000 US troops by the end of 2003?

13. If they can pin the brunt of the chaos/civil war in Iraq on Iran, then
they'll have another reason to invade Iran next.
