44. The consultant was Hank Schweinkopf
He was on a panel Lou Dobbs tonight too-and just as horrible, though he talked less.Lou asked why no one was standing with Feingold and Schweinkopf said the republicans are doing so bad the best thing for Democrats to do is just stand aside, watch and smile, let them destroy themselves.

Lou got irritated and said "What about those of us who aren't smiling. These are real problems..." and went on to name many.

But it made me wonder if our policy is to sit back and let republicans self destruct, if this guy had any real say.

Then there he is with Helms! Helms story about the bottle and waiting for the guy to hit himself joke fit Schweinkopf's just stand aside and smile advice on Dobbs perfectly! QUIT listening to consultants. Good God, watch republicans and bush screw America and smile? Way to show leadership.

This was hilarious but sad because it is so true.

And Hackett's poll #'s vis-a-vis Brown were pretty poor.

That being said, the way they forced Hackett out was pretty terrible, and the points they raise in this segment are pretty applicable across the board for the Democratic Party.

We'd much rather have a viable candidate who can raise money and win.

Ozark is not a voice for Ohio on this issue, just an exception to the norm.

The National party really blew it on this one! No surprise there.

I'm sure Brown's a great guy but he won't pull strongly with the lapsed Dems in Ohio's rural counties, like Hackett would have. And, anyway, primaries are the way for local Dems to decide who speaks for them and/or who they'd like to support in the general elections.

Washington-based Dems have never understood Ohio. Nothing changes.

51. Hackett's full of shit as usual,and what a mess a whiny,full-of-shit baby
makes.

"...Ari Berman, The Nation: One thing that hasn’t come up so far is Paul
Hackett, who obviously you’ve helped in the past. Hackett says he will campaign for you but at the same time he’s leaking an opposition memo about you to the press; he’s bashed you on right-wing radio, and he, generally speaking, seems more concerned with becoming a martyr than in helping Democrats get elected. Do you think that he will campaign for you in places like southern Ohio and how important a role do you think he can play in helping you win?

Brown: I hear what Paul says, that he will support me. I hope that he does. I hope that he campaigns extensively around the state. I have no idea what he’s actually going to do. He’s made a major contribution, especially in the special election last year, helping, with a lot of others, to make Iraq…helping people to understand more about the Iraq war. I hope he continues that kind of education for Ohioans.

Terence Samuel, AOL.com: Can you comment on how that scenario’s played out and what it says about the party generally -- the Paul Hackett situation?

Brown: It says little about the party. It says that one candidate was thirty points behind in the polls and barely had enough money in the bank to meet his payroll, and had no endorsements, only had union and only about three elected officials that I know of and party leaders endorsements, and wasn’t able to put together a big Senate race. A Senate race in a big state is a very extraordinarily complicated machinery to put together, and Paul had never been in a big race before. He’d been in a congressional race, which is a sprint, where he got huge help from outside his district, outside the state, including from me. I sent an organizer down there to put his get-out-the-vote operation together and raise money for him, and so did others. In the Senate race, he was way more on his own and he had to go from a city council seat, or a village council, in a town of four or five or six thousand to city council, I guess, to run for the Senate is a step that is very, very difficult and I think that he came up against reality. But it says nothing about the party. The party was not involved. I had my allies. Henry Waxman called some of his Los Angeles contributors for me and said “Sherrod Brown is the real progressive in this race; I hope you help him.” I had people around the country whom I knew doing that, who were progressives, but there was no party leader involvement…Dean or Reid. So, the reality was just politics... "

73. The segment is about democrats losing elections
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 07:38 PM by Hippo_Tron
And frankly Democrats have been getting our asses kicked by the GOP machine since 1968 and that is mostly what the Daily Show was pointing out. The segment did not criticize Sherrod Brown in any way at all, it criticized the Democrats for continuing to use the same strategies that have been making them lose elections for so many years.

If the insiders had thought that they could have picked up a senate seat in Minnesota in 1990, they would have forced Wellstone out of the race because he didn't have a lot of money or insitutional support. Thank god they didn't think that the seat could be one.

53. I don't suppose there's a transcript of this anywhere, is there?
I know there are video links (or I assume there will be at some point), but I'm at work with no speakers and I'd like to see if I heard something correctly when I saw it last night.

If not, no big deal. I'll just hunt around for the video when I get home later.

55. The Daily Show nailed it
The Beltway "leadership" and strategists need to see this.
Hackett was terrific.
It's sad, though, when the Party establishment is reduced to little more than a joke for late night comedians.

60. They should have Sherrod Brown on next
I'm sure they'll get a better idea about why he's better suited for the race.

68. Are you and Algorem trying to win supporters for Brown
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 03:34 PM by blue neen
or are you trying to scare them away? Did you ever hear of the line "You can win more friends with honey than with vinegar"?

I'm a good Democrat. I live in Pennsylvania but am an Ohio native. I am willing to go to the Cincinnati area to work for Sherrod Brown in the November election (provided that Santorum doesn't have a sudden burst of popularity in PA).

The Daily Show is a satire. :) Paul Hackett's appearance on it was all tongue-in-cheek. It was funny, and it was SUPPOSED to be funny! This thread was conveying that until certain posters had to start saying degrading things about Hackett. It wasn't necessary.

Take a good look at what you are doing. You wouldn't want to drive help away from Brown's campaign, would you?

It doesn't matter to the rest of us how this feud got started. All I can say is, at this point these arguments are doing nothing to win the day for Sherrod Brown.

JMHO,
