Army's Entire Collection of Abu Ghraib Abuse Photos on Web
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 04:53 PM by LiberalHeart
Salon.com has posted 279 photographs and 19 videos on its Web site -- each a disturbing visual record of detainee abuses at the infamous, US-controlled Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. All Abu Ghraib images displayed by Salon.com are from the Army's internal investigation of the detainee abuses that took place over a 3-month period. According to Salon, they help clarify who's responsible-- but not yet held accountable -- for what happened to the detainees.

More here, including link to photos and videos:

(apologies if this is a repeat; couldn't find it posted)

2. This is the ugliest part of the USA's adventure in Iraq

Up until this happened, we could at least tell ourselves..."well, we got rid of Saddam and he
really was a torturing bastard"

When this came out, it seemed like Washington DC was electrified ... the pols were all terrified
by the inevitable public backlash. That was my visceral impression. Then as time passed, and
this became just another story in the news cycle that 'cycled' out... and blame got muddied and
the guilty scuttled for cover and threw blame on "Lyndie Englund" ... we saw right away
how it just did not matter.

In the past I wondered how the Germans had been able to ignore "the Night of the Long Knives"...
the Reichstag Fire, even KristalNicht...

But... apparently it happens because we are all just peons.

As for me, I have suggested a General STRIKE by those who really want to strike a blow for
liberty.

I propose July 4.

No body WORKS ANYWHERE on that day.

5. Great idea!
Remember when there was all that talk about horrific pics that the New Yorker learned about? I think that was the pub. What happened to those? They supposedly included pictures of children being abused. Did the Army deep six those or what?

7. Just curious, but why did Salon get these?
I figured a website all its own would have been set up for access to these disturbing images.

Also, the videos don't seem to be working. Anyone else have that problem, too?

24. The ACLU disagrees: they don't know if they are or aren't.
"The ACLU has sued the Department of Defense for withholding photographs and videos depicting abuse at Abu Ghraib and other detention facilities. In September, a federal judge in New York ruled that the government must turn over the Abu Ghraib images, as well as other visual evidence of abuse, noting "the freedoms that we champion are as important to our success in Iraq and Afghanistan as the guns and missiles with which our troops are armed." The decision is currently on appeal by the government. The ACLU said it does not know whether the new photos aired by the Australian "Dateline" program are the same photos being withheld by the government.

"The public has a right to know the full truth about the treatment of detainees not just in Abu Ghraib but elsewhere in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantánamo Bay," said ACLU attorney Amrit Singh. "Instead of continuing to deny the widespread abuse, the government must hold relevant officials accountable for this abuse."

The ACLU has been in the courts since 2003 seeking the release of evidence of abuse. To date, almost 90,000 pages of government documents have been released in response to the ACLU's Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) lawsuit. The documents have revealed that harsh interrogation techniques were used indiscriminately in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantánamo Bay, and ultimately led to cases of abuse and torture. "

When FEMA sent it all to Maine!

No Crisis, but Maine Getting Plenty of Ice
by David Hench

The federal government is diverting hundreds of truckloads of bagged ice cubes from the Gulf Coast hurricane-relief effort to cold storage in Portland and other cities.

25. Headline is misleading.
There is no evidence that this is the 'entire collection'. The ACLU does not know if any of these pictures and videos are part of their FOIA lawsuit.

The ACLU statement is here: http://www.aclu.org/intlhumanrights/gen/24165prs20060215.html

29. When the first photos were released on TV...
the Corp Media chose the least horrific ones. Remember all of those RWingers saying that the treatment was not much worse than "Hazing"? Excuses were made that the detainees needed to be softened up for Interogation. It wasn't deemed torture but abuse. A "few bad apples" were convicted and sent to prison, a female Gen was demoted and the Pres said that America doesn't do torture.. A few months passed and the case was closed. Now it no longer matters because it's old news. Most Americans don't really care what happens to Iraiqis, Afghans, Africans, Pakistanis or any other peoples outside of America.

28. The material does not appear complete. However, it sure looks...
...like whomever provided the disc to them did everything they could to make it appear complete. I remember reading in a news article somewhere (sorry no link) that there were about 600-1,000 pictures(did not mention how many videos). Not only has Seymour Hersch talked about more damning material but the Taguba report does not go into more detail about what specific things are depicted by the photographs and videos.
