TUNA. Under the BED.
"Stating that no one in the world is prepared for an influenza pandemic, HHS Secretary Michael Leavitt said, "When you go to the store and buy three cans of tuna fish, buy a fourth and put it under the bed. When you go to the store to buy some milk, pick up a box of powdered milk. Put it under the bed. When you do that for a period of four to six months, you are going to have a couple of weeks of food, and that's what we're talking about."

Now we're seeing the Warner-Brothers version of reality. This is high comedy. Everything else in this horrible, murderous administration is described as "laughable" or "a joke" because of sheer deceit and willful neglect. When Bush says something utterly and profoundly stupid -which is always- I don't laugh; I become more embarrassed, afraid, and saddened.

But when a GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL tells me to put cans of tuna UNDER MY BED (my presumption here is that it was said with a STRAIGHT FACE and a trace of the excitement of revelation) I nearly spat tea all over my keyboard. The sense of this all not being quite real hit me like a pile of ACME Earthquake Pills (just add water). It hit me like a boulder falling on my tiny umbrella.

Neocons, I defy you to ever accuse me of being melodramatic or over-the-top again. Your Tuna-Under-The-Bed administration will not be lived down.

I think we should have a haiku contest called "Tuna and Powdered Milk"

I'll start:

"Milk is safe, powdered;
Better with Tuna from under
the place where you sleep.'

they have demonstrated that they can actually use computers.

I was kitty-sitting for a friend, and walked into the kitchen to see one of her cats batting the cat food off the counter, and the big tom backing the can (with a pop-top lid) into a corner, and hooking his claw into the pop top--damn near got it open!!

39. Reminds me of something Bob Dole said in his 1996 campaign
he was criticizing Clinton's efforts to provide affordable medical care, and told an anecdote about how they paid for catastrophic coverage in "his day":

They would "pass the hat" or take up a collection for the person in need, i.e., "help pay for Jim's appendectomy, toss a nickel in the hat". :eyes:

Yeah, that's a helluva insurance system there. "Sorry Jim, we couldn't take out your infected appendix-- we didn't sell enough cupcakes at the bake sale."

Just goes to show how totally disconnected these Repukes are from reality.

129. The VERY first thing I thought was "looney tunes"
and then of the cartoons. This is SO like that- the fact that it occured to the guy that this was the FIRST place to begin storing food. Like those gophers who store nuts under their beds! Or a Wile E. Coyote sketch. It's also really funny that those were the ONLY two foods he'd mentioned.

"Were any of these asshats actual people before they started working for this bunch of looney tunes?" That is a DAMN good question!

152. of course it's a perfectly reasonable thing to do
it's the way they think they have to give us their little examples, see children? you could keep this can under your bed. Isn't that fun??
I've lived in earthquake country, tornado country and now rain and flood country and yeah, ya need stuff stored up. I don't like being patronized by old rich white men.

140. I refuse to put food under my bed.
That way madness lies.

However, I do keep my pantry well-stocked. Who knows when someone will break a leg and not be able to get around so easily... or, yeah, bird flu, swine flu, etc.

143. remember George Costanza eating sandwiches in bed
while having sex? Hmm.
Anyway the thing that really angers me is the way these people talk down to us as though were are slow children. The country got along without them before they were here and please god will be when they are gone.(and soon I hope). I am so happy those senior citizen's jumped *s ass at that talk he gave. Getting old ladies mad is a bad idea.

157. So is Pickles stashing tuna and powdered milk under the bed?
These people are sooooooooo stupid. Shouldn't we be firing them? I mean in the private sector that they love so much, they would be fired.
