Fear of Death.
The solution to all of this is simple.

You must give up your fear of death.

Now; of course easier said than done; being a new mother life has become more precious to me than air--not mine;but my beautiful baby's. The pain caused by grief in another's death; how it shapes and tears a person; that is something to be reckoned with. Days I would not want to exist if the worst happened; I'm sure. But; my own death does not scare me. I firmly believe in the physics of reincarnation; but that's personal...

However; this is what they--Republicans; Fundamentalists of all stripes; terrorists; the concept of organized religion (I AM NOT ATTACKING THE RELIGION ITSELF) hold over your head; sword-of-Damacles like.

If we can show that there are things worse than death to be afraid of; that we are not responding to that false wolf cry anymore; they will have no more power over us.

I'm just sayin'. Something to keep in mind.

1. that seems the strangest of all -
the fundies being "afraid of death" when you'd think with their "deep faith" and all they couldn't wait to be with their maker. looks like their beliefs go only so far as to allow them to judge everybody else. their faith is fake.

3. That's why I included organized religion
it's just a way to pacify ppl as to their fear of death. Anyone who REALLY studies what Christ taught will understand that death is nothing to be afraid of; and that they don't NEED a preacher or anyone else to tell them that. The church performs more of a social function for them. Eh; I could go on; but preaching to the choir.

2. Interesting
I don't think I will fear the transition from the body to the spirit, but since I haven't experienced it yet, I can't say for sure. I have known those who have died and were greatly shocked and pleasantly surprised afterwards.....

7. Similiar to my own thoughts and experiences :-)
Fear of death is not on the list.

Anger at death however is, as I miss the contact and the what might have beens. But even this is not high on the list.

4. I went to a friend's workshop a few weeks ago.
He asserted succinctly that the basis for all the major religions was fear of death.

I think he's right and so are you.

6. Indeedy.
I also think that; as much as we are told to the contrary; ppl are slowly moving away from organized religion into other ways of expressing their beliefs. The churches are scared--because their main function is and has been (for awhile now) crowd control and money making. We don't need them for social structure anymore. A side note to that is the fact that they are still a social structure in the African-American community; which is why they are less political in some ways--more spiritual/caring.

5. I agree.
I think we should be braver than to allow the threat of death to stop of from living and living up to our ideals. That's basically what they've done -- get us all so afraid that we're willing to sell out everything good this country is supposed to be about in order to get a tiny bit of imaginary safety. If we're honest with ourselves and realistic about life, we can see that we live with death every single day. From car crashes and other accidents, to the threat of disease and everything else. It's a part of life. It's something you have to face and deal with, although so many people go through their lives resolutely ignoring it.

8. "I'm not afraid of death. But, I'm terrified of dying." - Woody Allen
I'm not sure of the exact words Woody used, but that's very close if not exact, and it explains the human condition.

Death itself isn't scary, one second you're here, the next you're not. But, the process is painful. Not in the physical sense so much as in the psychological.
