No difference between the parties?
No difference between the parties?
Posted by Evan Derkacz at 6:40 AM on March 17, 2006.

We like to complain and mock and make fun of Democrats for their timidity, careful language and the general right-shift of the past decade or more, but the truth is, as Bob Geiger points out, there is a distinct difference between the parties if you take a closer look. That's what Bob's good at:

"After over six months of wrangling... the Senate yesterday narrowly passed more funding for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP). The measure, which passed by a vote of 51-49, provides $3.3 billion in funding for fiscal year 2007 for this vital program that helps the elderly and disabled heat their homes in the winter."

The Democrats, all of whom voted for the funding were forced to find 5 Republicans to get it passed. Cynically, it was only cold-weather Republicans who signed on...

As for last year's 4 failed attempts to fund the program, Geiger believes this should help bring party distinctions into sharp relief: "A 60-vote majority was needed and each time the bills failed by 10 votes or less. The important thing to remember when you think both major parties are the same, is that in all four of those instances, almost every Democrat voted for heating assistance for the elderly and disabled and nearly every Republican voted against it, even with winter looming." 1. It's things like this that make us so OUTRAGED that they roll over
on issues like cloture over Alito, the bankruptcy bill, that awful Medicare prescription bill, and some of the social crap like the flag burning bill. It's what makes us outraged that they won't support a timid vote for CENSURE of a president who has so clearly violated the law.

Yes, there's an overall difference between the parties, but all of these Democrats who can be relied on to stab us all in the back need to realize that they are vulnerable in the upcoming election. Those old boys and old gals need to go ASAP so we can get people into office who will stand up for us consistently.

LIHEAP is one necessary program that helps the poor and the elderly. However, until we can get a party that addresses the very real problems the working class is facing, people will continue to say there is no difference between the parties, and to that extent they will be right.

No party can ignore its base and expect to get elected, yet that is exactly what the conservative-led Democratic Party has done for decades. Is it any wonder people say there is no difference when neither party represents their economic interest?
