Katrina funds blown on empty rooms & ice

BY CORKY SIEMASZKO
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

In the aftermath of Katrina, the feds spent $10 million to renovate and furnish 240 rooms in Alabama that housed just six hurricane survivors, congressional investigators found.
Authorities also spent $3 million on 4,000 beds that were never slept in and blew a fortune on ice that was not needed.

"Previous reports of waste in the aftermath of Katrina have been bad, but this one is worse," said Rep. Henry Waxman of California, the top Democrat on the House Government Reform Committee.

1. War Profiteering at it's best...
Criminal charges against the no-bid contracting companies and charges against Fema officials for fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars...

This is just bullshit!!

That money could have been used to rebuild homes in the Gulf....

... to corporate cronies. "It's not our fault" if people don't use their 'services'! It's ALL about feeding the profit-making machinery of entitlement-based corporatism.

4. All is not lost ...
I'm sure there will be enough money left to rebuild Trent Lott's house, so that Bush can plop his boney ass on his new front porch, just as he said he would.

Don't worry - be happy. :sarcasm:

5. Move Quickly....say what?
"However, in the event of a disaster when minutes count, we have the authority to do what it takes to move quickly," she said.

FEMA moves quickly? How quickly did they move to get people out of their attics or off their roof? How long did the bodies float in the putrid water of NO? Why are the millions of dollars worth of trailers sitting at the Hope, Arkansas airport? Now, we see why the cruise line was put under contract so quickly.

What happens when the GAO finds these abuses? Is anyone actually charged, fined or black-listed? It would be interesting to see a list of the fraudulent contracts put out by this administration for Iraq, Katrina, et al., and the findings and/or disposition by the GAO. That information should be available to the public, shouldn't it?
