V for VENDETTA: the movie that will make Bushies piss themselves
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 05:41 PM by yurbud
I just got back from V.

You MUST see this movie. SPOILER WARNING!

Endless artificial fear...

Spying...

Creating epidemics then profiting by offering the cure...

Disinformation and collusion between the media and government...

There are really two primary differences between that story and our reality:

We still have the facade of democracy at the national level, and some degree of reality of it at lower levels.

The other difference is how people reacted. V doesn't start a violent revolution but inspires a White Palace moment when soldiers have to decide whether to fire on their own people or not.

I think it's possible to get to that moment without violence, at least none from our side.

But as this movie shows, there are some things people shouldn't tolerate and won't, and will stand together against.

I'm not sure what that incitement is, whether it's starting another war, or a terrorist attack to convince people to demand a war, or one more seemingly trivial thing like the ports deal that rouses the public out of the blue, but it's coming.

They aren't tracking my ass! Was a great flick!

For Vendetta masks, they're selling "Wondercon" masks on Ebay here:

http://search.ebay.com/v-for-vendetta-mask_W0QQfnuZ1QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQsbrsrtZlQQxpufuZx

I would really hope that they don't keep these "exclusive" and offer a relatively decent mask for EVERYONE to be able to wear (along with a cape and hat too! I can just see us all decked this way in another march on Washington at some point, or on Halloween. Too bad this film wasn't released close to Halloween. It would have been a perfect time to have the interest up and to march on Washington with the same masks, etc. too! I don't see how the MSM could avoid the connection then!

29. Yup, Bush and Rove already did this with Babylon 5
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 08:26 PM by calipendence
Read this account from Bruce Boxleitner after his trip to the White House a few years ago.

http://groups.google.com/group/rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5.moderated/browse_thread/thread/887aaec99134ade1

So I was talking to Doug Netter this afternoon, who had in turn spoken with
Bruce Boxleitner earlier in the day about the year 2 DVD. In the course of
that conversation, Bruce mentioned something that Doug in turn mentioned to me.

To wit:

Bruce had been at the White House about a month ago, in the company of wife
Melissa Gilbert, president of the Screen Actors Guild, for a discussion with
some of the functionaries there concerning acting roles moving north of the
Canadian border.

As they're talking, in a long conference room, in the middle of the meeting the
door oens and Karl Rove -- main strategist for the Republican Party and power
behind the White House throne
-- comes in. He says (paraphrased from memory)
to Melissa, "I hope you'll forgive me, but I actually here to see Bruce."

He then tells Bruce, "I just wanted to tell you that I'm a big science fiction
fan, and that Babylon 5 is the best science fiction television series *ever*."

Then there's a pause, and he adds....

"And the President thinks so too."

Upon hearing this, I went to lie down for a spell, but I fully expect to be
back on my feet by Spring, latest.

11. Question:
Why is it rated "R?" My kids (two teens and a tween) want to see it and those ratings can be so misleading. I'd rather have them see an intelligent "R" rated film, than some of the trashy, sexist "PG-13" movies.

31. Just got back from it
I think everyone who posts here would enjoy it, and get it. I'm still trying to figure out if the rest of the country will get it, or just see it as standard Hollywood action/adventure fare. The crowd I saw it with seemed like a typical Friday night movie crowd, and though they saw the same movie I did, I don't know if they took away from it the same things I did.

I'm definitely interested in how the right tries to frame this movie. Stupid as they are, I'm hoping they will bloviate about it endlessly, driving up interest and ultimately getting lots more people to see it. I think it can't help but awaken some generally apolitical people, and that is too much of a threat to Bush's foot soldiers.

If there's any question about the film's political targets, "Vendetta" opens with a ridiculously racist and homophobic screed by Prothero, the Bill O'Reilly-like "Voice of London" who speaks on what appears to be the country's only television channel. "The former United States is the world's biggest leper colony," he spits. "And it wasn't because of the immigrants, the Muslims or the homosexuals, or the war that they started. No," he says. "It's because they're Godless!"

If Andy and Larry Wachowski's "The Matrix" trilogy turned millions of Americans on to cyberpunk culture and postmodern theory, then "V for Vendetta," the brothers' latest project (which opens today), might just do the same for out-and-out revolution.

The news reports about "The former United States" and "Civil war rages in the former US"
sent chills down my spine. I know the source material for this film wasn't intended for any reference
to the US but the people who made this movie were putting it right in the Bush administration's face IMO.
