A St. Patrick's Day poem for DU.
I posted this as a response to H2O Man's earlier thread, and decided I'd like to share it with everybody. It's a poem by the Irish poet Austin Clarke (May 9, 1896–March 19, 1974):

Penal Law

Burn Ovid with the rest. Lovers will find
A hedge-school for themselves and learn by heart
All that the clergy banish from the mind,
When hands are joined and head bows in the dark.

And the motto on my Irish ancestor's family crest also seems appropriate. It translates as "Victory from the hills".

Much joy to all at DU, our own "hedge-school". And remember, it was the Irish who saved civilization by preserving the ancient texts during the Dark Ages. It feels like we're doing the same kind of work at DU.

4. We know that the only thing you banish from the mind
is despair.

Here's to you:

5. saint patrick somewhere else
Edited on Fri Mar-17-06 09:59 PM by sweetheart
O Saint patrick somewhere else,
As if it means something genetic and inbred,
to shout drunken ringing saint's bells,
and if your not Irish, you do something else instead.

:-)

But if you're not not Irish,
then bless the great saint verdant isle,
if we can freely take the piss,
many love's sung an Irishman's smile.

Yet if you're Scot's green Celtic squad,
you can drink too and pretend its your team awhile,
then cross that angry irish sea god,
join the green team, be "Irish" with guile,
owwwaking up after that party all green
oh blinding headache, was it a dream.

7. Three cheers for St. Patrick!

Whether or not he drove out the snakes or converted the Irish, he was the first in history to condemn the keeping of slaves regardless of who was the keeper and who were the slaves. That alone is enough to celebrate him.
