Illegal immigrants benefits in hands of voters
Illegal immigrants benefits in hands of voters
By HOWARD FISCHER
Friday, March 17, 2006 1:04 PM CST

PHOENIX -- Ignoring a complaint it is one sided, the Senate on Thursday voted 18-11 to ask voters to deny subsidized child care and adult education classes to those who entered this country illegally.

Sen. Dean Martin, R-Phoenix, said SCR 1031 is simply giving voters another chance to weigh in on whether they believe illegal immigrants are entitled to state services. Martin said he believes the state, taking an unnecessary narrow and legalistic view of Proposition 200, never fully implemented the 2004 voter-approved mandate which he believes was designed to make all benefits off limits.

Martin also promised the final measure that would go to voters in November also will include something not now in the measure: Requiring those not here legally to pay the higher non-resident tuition at state community colleges and universities even if they were living in Arizona, albeit illegally, for years.

That provision was altered by Sen. Robert Cannell, R-Yuma, to allow in-state tuition if a student has been here six years, graduated from high school and at least one parent paid state taxes during that time. But Martin said he believes he has the votes to restore the original language -- and the outright ban on resident tuition -- when the measure now goes to the House.

Thursday's vote came over the objections of Sen. Bill Brotherton, D-Phoenix who tried unsuccessfully to amend the proposal to also include various sanctions against the companies who knowingly hire undocumented workers. These ranged from denial of tax credits and loss of state contracts to actually being put out of business.

1. Illegal still means something.
Key word here is illegal.

While you can argue racism, bigotry or anti-Hispanic or Latino
all you want immigration law must mean something. We should
have legal quotas for immigration, that doesn't make you
anti-immigrant or racist. Nor should states be forced to pay
for residential benefits for non-residents or illegal
residents.

Just like I couldn't believe Faux News had a 5 minute piece of
legalizing illegal Irish immigrants. I mean, wow, they're
white! They're Christian! I couldn't believe Mr. Big Head
Cavuto still questioned why those illegals should be made
legal.

proper papers.

Got to love the Neo-Whigs trying to roll up the carpet and build the four sided wall around our nation. And of course "illegal" means something, it means you can dehumanize them to the point you don't have to think when you say things like "I don't think we should let those human beings in our hospitals for medical treatment." Or "we can't educate these human beings' children"

How long before the Neo-Whigs start taking Jean-Marie Le Pen’s Front National's stance of "just cause they are born here doesn't make them citizens" ?????? :puke:

6. My mother didn't have papers when she immigrated from England.
Neither did her mother, or the other 5 kids she brought along. They were just poor. Much like the folks crossing the border from the south.

The new "Know Nothing Party" is quite popular for alleged progressives who "care" about poor people.

8. I bet if we had the draft things would be different
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 02:33 PM by RGBolen
I had quite a few that as they got off the boat weren't welcomed to the US but to the Union Army and sent south with a gun and if they were lucky a pair of boots. Just as today they were only given citizenship after they were killed.

7. My great-great grandparents did.
Didn't yours?

I believe that citizenship by birth is in the Constitution, no? If I am correct that would make your fear in your last sentence very unlikely.

We need to create laws that make sense and then enforce them. How bout we trade in some of the H1B visa quota (skilled workers like IT, which we clearly need to reduce) for some "guest worker" or other type of visa for unskilled or semi-skilled labor? Or just adjust the quotas so that they make sense and Americans can still get decent wages?

Once the laws are right, enforce them. Someone here illegally needs emergency medical care? Give it to them. Treat them humanely as you deport them. If they can't be deported due to political conditions, they need to be handled under asylum rules.

I don't know why this is so freakin' hard for people to get.

9. No all mine didn't

You've heard the phrase "with only the shirt on his back" I had a great-great-grandfather who not only didn't have the papers to immigrate here, but he had stolen the shirt that was on his back. But he risked his life to get here, hiding in the bottom of a ship, then risked his life once he got here fighting in a war he knew nothing about, then when he returned risked his life helping build the great city of New York and this country.

10. So how did he become "legal"?
Just wondering...

Although, I don't necessarily think that the way things were handled in the 1800's has much to do with how they should be handled now.

he never got citizenship, don't know for sure but I would think he might not have wanted it by then.

on edit. I don't know enough about the how's after entering illegally, I would hope after serving in the military he was just given a legal status.

2. AUCTION OFF CITIZENSHIP ON EBAY
The government is missing a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY. We could be auctioning off citizenships on Ebay. Let them go to the highest bidder. Use the money to pay off the National Debt. But, we can't use the term Dutch auction unless we are restricting the citizenships to just Dutch people.

England does it. In fact it's in the news today where Blair and cohorts have been selling off "peerages". You can be a Lord in England for about 1 1/2 million bucks.

5. We're the heroes wearing the traditional white sheets when voting?
Or, did they settle for the always popular Brown Shirts?

We sure don't want poor brown people getting child care or education. It would interfere with their tomato-picking and toilet scrubbing. All those wonderful jobs they're "stealing" from good white 'Murkins.

15. Golf courses. I hope Pheonix can manage their greens
when they deport all the caretakers. Wouldn't want those rich white retirees playing through on overgrown grass.

These threads just kill me with their progressivocity.

And, grateful that those nasty, poor, brown people aren't "stealing" their jobs anymore.

18. What is always missed is that "Law and order" is the
Thug code for segregation and discrimination and has been for many years now.

20. "Law and Order" were bywords for segregationists.
Starting with the KKK after the Civil War when they nightriders tortured and assasinated "uppity" ex-slaves for daring to "steal" work from the whites and wouldn't return to slavery.

have their way, they will stay that way.
