Yesterday was a milestone day for the Mac. A pair of enterprising hackers got Windows XP to boot on an Intel-based Mac, and won almost $14,000 for their troubles.

Face it, Mac software has always been superior. The problem is that their hardware has always been overpriced to the point that most of us just passed it up and decided to live with Windows and its flaws.

But why would I want to do that?

If you like the Mac, get a Mac; if you like Windows, get a Windows machine. The data files are compatible, for the most part. Outside of service bureaus and software developers making products for both platforms, I can't see the point.

Mac the next time, haven't done it yet though. I like the idea because I only have one program that I just have to have and it's a windows compatible program not mac. I know a few people who have mac's and the literally love them. So now all I have to do is buy another hard drive and load it with os X, is that right

on a regular PC like Windows does.

As for me, I have two PCs, one with Windows, the other with Linux. I have all the applications I need between those two.

I hated my Mac. Went back to Windows after two years.

Nothing personal.

I just don't get it. My machine blew up just as often, didn't run software that I needed. The software it DID run was way more expensive. All the components were proprietary and very expensive. Sheesh. Fergit it.

Macs. He works in an IT area for a research medical facility.

He doesn't feel Mac has inherent advantages over Windows in terms of overall user friendliness and reliability at this point, although there is still a security advantage as far as viruses and malware.

Of course he doesn't work in graphic design where we always here about the supposed superiority of Macs and their applications for this.

Intel is one of the biggest Rethug donors out there.

When these machines die, we'll go completely Linux, use AMD chipsets and never look back.

Why would I want the headaches of dealing with those virus ridden, buggy, crash prone pieces of bloatware? Thanks, but I'll stick with something reliable.

Mostly Linux distros on the severs and laptops for the heavy lifting, a couple of windoz boxes for those of you who INSIST on posting wmf files and other non-standard multi-media files that can ONLY be read by windows, and of course my wife has her iMac.

After 25years in the software design business I can say without qualification that no one OS can be everything to everybody. The key is to dedicate systems to certain kinds of functions.

As a side note, with all the PC/104+, mini-ITX, etc hardware now on the market running embedded version of Linux and Java, it is getting easier to have more and more dedicated systems on your local home network for a variety of things (routers, multi-media, file services, web services, etc, etc).

Just my $.02 since OS religion wars are so late 90's. :)
