Does John McCain Have Alzheimer's?
From The Democratic Daily--see original post for links.

http://blog.thedemocraticdaily.com/?p=2331

I wouldn’t really pretend to diagnose someone without seeing them, but at least we might do for fun what Bill Frist though he could really do. So today we will play a new game I’d like to call “Does John McCain Have Alzheimer’s?”

Let’s look at the signs and see if they add up.

Is McCain practicing the Richard Fish (of Ally McBeal) philosophy of “bygones” or has he really forgotten what Bush did to him in the 2000 primaries? McCain has been working to get closer to Bush, from the hug pictured above to the Republican straw poll last week. Now he has picked a top Bush advisor to run his PAC. Memory loss or forgiveness? We report, you decide.

Then there’s the question of judgement. It might make a sense to hitch your horse to a popular incumbent, but to Mr. 33% And Falling? That’s no more sensible than to back the teaching of intelligent design.

We’ve seen delusions of grandieur as he’s imagined being picked as VP choice by both Bush and Kerry.

We’ve even seen some aberrant behavior this year in his letter to Senator Obama.

There was a time when, compared to the Bush crowd, John McCain seemed to be a Republican who sometimes made sense. Now its getting harder and harder to tell them apart. Perhaps such a descent into irrationality is what is required to communicate with the Republican base these days. Such a theory as to McCain’s strange behavior may be even more valid than to think he has Alzheimer’s.

7. Didn't Bush claim that McCain went nuts in a POW camp...
And that he shouldn't be trusted to be President, because he was still nuts, in 2000?

Bush's first success at projecting his flaw on to his opponent.

12. More Likely Metastatic Melanoma In His Brain
Given his history of Melanoma, his swollen glands on the side of his face where the melanoma was removed, his strange behavior, his love embrace of Bush in this pic.

At one time I actually thought McCain was the "Maverick" that America might need, not sure I would have voted for him, but I did admire him.

Now he just looks and acts like a neutered dog, groveling at the feet of the Chimperor.

16. John McCain, Hypocrite
John McCain, Hypocrite
by Doug Ireland

John McCain, the media's darling, has found a clever way around his own campaign finance reform law to take big corporate bucks in furtherance of his political ambitions while carrying water for the corporate mammoth providing the dough. But the national press is ignoring the story.

The Associated Press first ran the story of John McCain's odorous but lucrative Senatorial service to the communications giant Cablevision on the afternoon of March 7. But, while some local papers in McCain's home state (like the East Valley Tribune) have run the story, nothing has as yet made it into the print editions of the New York Times, the L.A. Times, the Washington Post, or any of the half-dozen other big city dailies I checked (although, if one searches the hundreds of AP stories available on the Post's website on its Politics page by clicking on "Latest Wire Reports," one can find it there--but how many readers would bother to do that?) One notable exception: the Kansas City Star.

Here's what the AP's investigation found:

McCain repeatedly intervened on behalf of a policy Cablevision favored -- one which "congressional and private studies conclude could make cable more expensive" -- while his chief political adviser, Rick Davis (who's masterminding McCain's probable '08 presidential rerun) solicited $200,000 in contributions from Cablevision to an institute that promotes McCain and pays Davis a $110,000 annual salary.

The Reform Institute was set up to promote McCain and his issues--especially campaign finance reform, embodied in the famous McCain-Feingold law. This Institute is "a tax-exempt group that touts McCain's views and has showcased him at events since his unsuccessful 2000 presidential campaign," and it "often uses the senator's name in press releases and fund-raising letters and includes him at press conferences," the AP says. And, of course, it provides a cushy sinecure with no heavy lifting for McCain's main man, Davis, as he prepares the pontificating Senator's next presidential run. Cablevision's contributions account for a whopping 15% of the Institute's budget.

McCain hypocrisy:

The Bushification of John McCain

By Ari Melber, AlterNet. Posted November 15, 2005.

The bad blood between the two men has been infamous since 2000, when Bush's campaign lied about McCain's family and war service, and McCain told Bush to "get out of the gutter."

But during Bush's reelection in 2004, McCain strained to embrace his former rival -- literally. In their first joint appearance, they hugged dramatically before 6,000 soldiers at a Fort Lewis rally. Those events made for great campaign visuals. Yet while most Americans saw McCain's big heart, Republican leaders saw hungry ambition.

Rich Lowry, editor of the conservative magazine National Review, recently described that campaign bear hug as nothing but proof of "the senator's presidential ambitions." Lowry argues it's just part of McCain's scheme to get "the Right to stop loathing him." In targeted moves since the election, McCain has continued his Bushification by changing positions on conservative priorities like creationism, gay marriage and tax cuts.

As the costs of Hurricane Katrina mounted, McCain went on national television and told Chris Mathews the Bush tax cuts must be maintained. But McCain voted against those tax cuts.

In fact, he was one of only two Republicans to oppose Bush's signature 2001 tax cut. Given the surging costs of Katrina, Iraq and Medicare, there is no policy rationale for reversing his position now. The only rationale is political pandering. And that's exactly how some influential conservatives see it. Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, recently said that although McCain has "flip-flopped on a number of issues," he is still "anti-taxpayer" because "he's voted against every tax cut."

Yet the mainstream media is so attached to McCain's maverick image, most journalists didn't cover the tax reversal.

15. I've lost every shred of respect for McCain
At one time I thought he was a moderate, one that was not exactly friendly to the left but not hostile to it either. Since he went over to the Bushies my good opinion of him is lost irevocably. He wants to be president more than he wants to be a leader. That dog don't hunt, John.

between McCain & Bush. He called it brilliant or some such word. He said that everyone knows they HATE each other but McCain is making a very smart political move. I am paraphrasing but that was the gist of what Scarborough was saying. This was on his show a week or more ago.

20. Naw, he really wants to be Prez and knows he's gotta get the
fundies on his side to get the nomination. I'm sure, in private, he still hates Shrub and Rove, but he's very good at hiding it!

ANY Pub National Candidate must keep the fundies happy or he loses 25%- 30% of the vote, and you sure can't win that way!

I used to like McCain too! He was very convincing when he rode the Straight Talk Express Bus. I even changed Party registrations to vote for him. I did like him, but I mostly didn't want Shrub to be the winner! Well, I lost on both counts. I voted for Gore and AH got in the WH anyway!

25. He did. John McCain is NO war hero!
He gave up military secrets so that he could get medical treatment. And how embarrassing would it be to have a president who is humiliated with a monument erected by his captors?

http://www.antiwar.com/justin/j092999.html

On the shores of Truc Bach Lake, a monument now stands, inscribed with these words: "Here on 26 October 1967 at Truc Bach Lake in the capital city of Ha Noi, John Sidney McCain was shot out of the sky in his A4 aircraft by local citizens' militia defending Yen Phu. There were 10 other planes shot down on the same day." The monument is in the rough shape of a plane, or the severed head of a crucifix, with the kneeling figure of John McCain at its center. Head bowed in penitence, knees buckling, eyes hooded in shame, he looks like a man quite capable of saying, even some thirty years later, "I am a war criminal; I bombed innocent women and children" – as he did in an interview with Mike Wallace on Sixty Minutes in 1997.

23. Last week at the RNC meeting, McCain said that anyone that said . . .
. . . that Bush lied about the WMD's in Iraq was lying!

Well, this totally contradicts reality.

Because Bush didn't just say Iraq has WMD's, he said he KNEW that Iraq had WMD's!

27. Important point on WMD
I suspect that Bush will try to get out of this by claiming that he believed there was WMD based upon intelligence available. Conservatives are using Cobra II to try to justify this claim. However, going back over the actual statements from the Bush administration, they were claiming a far stronger case for WMD than could be justified by being mistaken.

So, they will try to claim ignorance/incompetence to get out of claims of lying, and this won't be enoough.Hopefully in the end people will realize they are both incompetent and dishonest (as is suggested in the latest Pew survey).
