9/11 was an aberration, al-Qaeda is not an "organization" and oil disruptions are not as big a threat as CNN wants us to believe. I think this documentary was made to prepare America to invade Iran. During the turmoil of the Iran-Iraq war, we still have oil supplies flowing nicely. People need to chill out and stop being so paranoid.

I don't agree with the posters there who think idustrial civilization will collapse, but we are in for a wild ride for the next 30 years.

The word "peak" does not mean "depleted." It means we're at the top of the oil supply graph. There is still huge amounts of oil on Earth. I agree that 30 to 50 years down the road, depleted oil will be a big deal. But I disagree that the crisis is "imminent" and we all need to hunker down and invade nations so Halliburton can get wealthier. LOL.

...from now on and the market won't react fast enough bringing alternatives on-line to prevent major economic trouble. This comming depression is going to kill suburbia and car culture forever.

I only hope the hype about peak oil results in BILLIONS for alternative energy, rather than BILLIONS for invading Iran and occupying Iraq. I'm afraid the hyped fear will only result in more war.

Remember when Cheney said there was NO need for us to conserve? Oil is a finite energy source. To act like it isn't is irresponsible.

What kind of future are we leaving our kids?

Of course we still have plenty of oil, but that isn't what matters. What matters is the total rate of extraction, which is currently peaking.

The show was an odd mix of fact and fictional scenario. While it was probably useful in waking up another 2% of Americans to the threat of a severe oil disruption due to terrorism or Mother Nature, it didn't go far enough, in my opinion. The Gulf of Mexico drilling/refining impacts from Katrina had an impact on energy prices, as future hurricanes and terrorist actions will. But despite the Mathew Simmons interview segments, the show did little to address the larger problem: whether industrial nations can dramatically adjust their energy requirements in the coming decades to avoid economic collapse, as oil and gas become increasingly difficult to find and extract.
