'Choose Life' Plates Allowed in Tenn.

snip:
This undated artist's rendering provided by Tennessee Right to Life, shows the proposed Choose Life license plate for Tennessee. Tennessee can sell license plates that say "Choose Life," even though it doesn't offer one with an abortion rights message, a federal appeals court ruled Friday, March 17, 2006. (AP Photo/Tennessee Right to Life , File) (AP)

"Although this exercise of government one-sidedness with respect to a very contentious political issue may be ill-advised, we are unable to conclude that the Tennessee statute contravenes the First Amendment," Judge John M. Rogers said in a 2-1 ruling.

snip:
In a dissenting opinion, Judge Boyce F. Martin Jr. said the plates should be banned because they amount to unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination.

Abortion-rights proponents complained the state does not offer those with other political views a similar way to express them. An attempt to create a "Choose Choice" tag failed in the Legislature in 2002.

Children of Abraham: Death in the Desert
Sunday, 19 March 2006
What happened in the village of Isahaqi, north of Baghdad, on Ides of March? The murk of war – the natural blur of unbuckled event, and its artificial augmentation by professional massagers – shrouds the details of the actual operation. But here is what we know.

We know that U.S. forces conducted a raid on a house in the village on March 15. We know that the Pentagon said the American troops were "targeting an individual suspected of supporting foreign fighters for the al-Qaeda in Iraq terror network," when their team came under fire, and that the troops "returned fire. utilizing both air and ground assets." We know that the Pentagon said that "only" one man, two women and one child were killed in the raid, which destroyed a house in the village.

3. Choose life slogan brings the opening of "Trainspotting" to mind.
Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television, Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players, and electrical tin openers. Choose good health, low cholesterol and dental insurance. Choose fixed- interest mortgage repayments. Choose a starter home. Choose your friends. Choose leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose a three piece suite on hire purchase in a range of fucking fabrics. Choose DIY and wondering who you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing sprit- crushing game shows, stuffing fucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away at the end of it all, pishing you last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked-up brats you have spawned to replace yourself. Choose your future. Choose life... But why would I want to do a thing like that?

RENTON: I chose not to choose life: I chose something else. And the reasons? There are no reasons. Who need reasons when you've got heroin?

4. Legally It May Have Been A Correct Ruling, But The Legislature Sucks.
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 08:47 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
I'm not sure the legal issue is what is flawed. I think the part that is disgraceful and unfortunate is that the legislature refused to allow one with the pro-choice argument. The reason I don't find flaw with the law allowing the plates is because the plates themselves say nothing wrong. If the law said all plates BUT pro-choice ones are allowed then that is a legal issue and discriminatory. But since the law is just allowing these plates, along with hundreds of others of laws allowing plates, I think it is legally sound. But the voters should be outraged that the legislature refuses to also allow a counter-argument plate and hopefully they will vote a new legislature in that will allow it.

7. That's what I thought...
I don't have a problem with the plate itself, but the fact they won't allow an opposite view is what's troubling. I'm hoping they'll see the hypocrisy and fix it...but I'm not holding my breath.

After all, this is the state that's considering banning the sale of dildos. :eyes:

5. "... the proposed Choose Life license plate ..."
Good God, remind me NOT to drive in Tennessee any time soon.

Who knew a human infant could be made to look that diabolical?

I hope they go with THIS one - I've never seen such visual encouragement for thinking twice about having a baby ...

11. I remember following a bright red van with one in Glacier Park in
Montana. They were the absolute worst drivers I'd ever seen. It wasn't so much that they were distratced by scenery, they were at their worst in the parking lot!

14. They're fun to work with
In Florida, Choose Life is on the top of the plate. I take some masking tape, color it the same as the plate, and write "Without Parole", and stick it on the bottom of the plate.

Turns it into a nice anti-death penalty plate.

A sick mind is a terrible thing to waste.

8. This is kind of a non-issue in my opinion
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 09:00 PM by DinoBoy
Just looking at the state department's website indicates that many private clubs or groups (as well as schools, teams, veterans/military organizations) can apply to have specialty plates. In Montana, a plate is produced by Planned Parenthood as well as some right-to-life organization. Why can't Planned Parenthood or some other blanket pro-choice organization produce a pro-choice license plate in Tennessee?

Montana's Planned Parenthood plate:

Montana's Choose Life plate:

ON EDIT: I'd like to add that it becomes a HUGE issue if say PP applies for a plate and their application is denied. Then this moves from kind of a tempest in a teapot to clear cut discrimination.

13. I'd also like to add that that "Choose Life" plate is a huge rip off
of a very popular plate, the Gallitan Valley Open Lands Board, which raises money to preserve natural meadowlands from development in and around Bozeman.

12. Florida also has "Choose Life" plates. Funny though, When I went...
..to the DMV to get my plates, I told this Prune-Faced clerk:
"I want a plate that says..."Choose Death and Destruction"

..He didn't think it was amusing...

17. I was driving home a while back
And this junker in front of me was going 10 mph below the speed limit, and her Florida vanity plate was "DUBYA". I passed her, and at the next light she pulled up behind my pick-up, with all it's anti-bush bumper stickers, and Kerry stickers. Through the rearview mirror it looked like she was conducting an exorcism on my truck.

She almost rear-ended me a little while later when i was making a turn. She was following so close trying to read them all.

16. Too bad
here in CA some guy got his "IRAQ OUT" personalize plate denied.

I really don't care what you put ohn your license plate. Just as long as everyone can have a choice. Ok maybe FUCK U! isn't approriate but except for obcenities who cares? I agree with one of the posters here who said that it make it easy to identify them.

Perhaps instead of the cute little baby it might be interesting to usea picture of what a baby on crack looks like when its mom is forced to carried it to term. Not quite so pretty.
