Libby Trial May Be Embarrassment for Bush
By PETE YOST

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Lawyers for Vice President Dick Cheney's former top aide are signaling they may delve deeply at his criminal trial into infighting among the White House, the CIA and the State Department over pre-Iraq war intelligence failures.

In a prelude to a possible defense, the lawyers for I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby also are suggesting that the State Department - not Libby - may be to blame for leaking the identity of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame to the media.

Court papers filed late Friday raise the possibility a trial could become politically embarrassing for the Bush administration by focusing on the debate about whether the White House manipulated intelligence to justify the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

2. It IS an embarrassment - for the entire country.
This should be an election issue for every dem in the '06 congressional elections.

As should this assortment of GOP assisted debacles:

1. Plamegate/Libby indictment scandal.
2. Abramoff lobbying scandals.
3. DeLay indictment for fund raising and money laundering scandals.
4. Prescription drug program screws elderly and enriched drug companies.
5. Port security/UAE deal.
6. Ongoing no end in sight war - poor outfitting of troops - government sanctioned torture and human rights abuses.
7. Katrina/Fema/Homeland insecurity debacle.
8. Federal budget deficit OUT OF CONTROL!! These are conservatives !? What are they conserving ??

3. I smell a WEINBERGER coming!!!!!!!!!!!
Remember how "Cap the Knife" Weinberger averred that he wasn't gonna take the fall for Poppy, who PROMPTLY pardoned him IN ADVANCE OF TRIAL???

A brief refresher:

BUSH PARDONS WEINBERGER, FIVE OTHERS TIED TO IRAN-CONTRA

(Calls Weinberger "true American patriot") (650) By Dian McDonald USIA White House Correspondent Washington -- President Bush December 24 granted pardons to former Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger and five other individuals for their conduct related to the Iran-Contra affair.

Bush said Weinberger -- who had been scheduled to go on trial in Washington January 5 on charges related to Iran-Contra -- was a "true American patriot," who had served with "distinction" in a series of public positions since the late 1960s.

"I am pardoning him not just out of compassion or to spare a 75-year-old patriot the torment of lengthy and costly legal proceedings, but to make it possible for him to receive the honor he deserves for his extraordinary service to our country," Bush said in a proclamation granting executive clemency.

The president also pardoned five other persons who already had pleaded guilty or had been indicted or convicted in connection with the Iran-Contra arms-for-hostages investigation. They were Elliott Abrams, a former assistant secretary of state for Inter-American affairs; former National Security Adviser Robert McFarlane; and Duane Clarridge, Alan Fiers, and Clair George, all former employees of the Central Intelligence Agency....

He justified his pardons by saying their INTENT was PATRIOTISM....!!! The last refuge of a scoundrel!!!!

When the fuck will we EVER learn?????
