A Cherokee Proverb.
An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil - he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good - he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.
This same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his
grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

6. I sure wish I knew more about my heritage
I am about 1/4 Cherokee and know nothing. But I recently changed my first name to something that honors my Cherokee-ness, or Native American-ness. :)

8. My 2 older sisters have a different father than I.
And they are both 1/4 Cherokee as well. I am Irish/Welsh/German/Whatever. But I've always loved the Native American history and teachings.

16. Me too Solomon.
It appeals to the philosophical side of me. The Hopi are attributed with this quote:

Wisdom comes only when you stop looking for it and start living the life the Creator intended for you.

I've typically shunned most organized religions all my life, but philosophy and wisdom are of such great inspiration to me, it helps me deal with this crazy world and its crazy leaders.

12. I heard almost the same quote in a cancelled TV show...
Aaron Spelling actually tried his hand at making a vampire show based on the Vampire: The Masquerade RPG. Only made 8 episodes. But somebody used that quote, only changed it from wolves to a black dog and a white dog, and eventually whichever one you feed more gets big enough to devour the other one.

20. You are welcome.
I love the Native American 10 Commandments. I think both Republican's and Democrat's could use a little lesson from our Native American forefathers.

1. Treat the Earth and all that dwell therein with respect

2. Remain close to the Great Spirit

3. Show great respect for your fellow beings

4. Work together for the benefit of all Mankind

5. Give assistance and kindness wherever needed

6. Do what you know to be right

7. Look after the well-being of Mind and Body

8. Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater Good

9. Be truthful and honest at all times

10. Take full responsibility for your actions

19. Love it - thank you! I will add that to my daily reading. This is what I'm
reading currently to help the peaceful wolf:

Words of Kindness

This is what should be done
Be the one who is skilled in goodness,
And who knows the path of peace:
Let them be able and upright,
Straightforward and gentle in speech.

Humble and not conceited,
Contented and easily satisfied.
Unburned with duties and frugal in their ways.

Peaceful and calm, and wise and skillful,
Not proud and demanding in nature.
Let them not do the slightest thing
That the wise would later reprove.

Wishing: In gladness and in safety,
May all beings be at ease.
Whatever living beings there may be;
Whether they are weak or strong, omitting none,
The great or the mighty, medium, short or small,
The seen and the unseen,
Those living near and far away,
Those born and to-be-born,
May all beings be at ease!

Let none deceive another,
Or despise any being in any state.
Let none through anger or ill-will
Wish harm upon another.

Even as a mother protects with her life,
Her child, her only child,
So with a boundless heart
Should one cherish all living beings:
Radiating kindness over the entire world
Spreading upwards to the skies,
And downwards to the depths;
Outward and unbounded,
Freed from hatred and ill-will.

Whether standing or walking, seated or lying down
Free from drowsiness,
One should sustain this recollection.
This is said to be the sublime abiding.

By not holding to fixed views,
The pure-hearted one, having clarity of vision,
Being freed from all sense desires,
Is not born again into this world.

22. That's beautiful.
It is similar in meaning to this:

Lakota Instructions for Living

Friend do it this way - that is,
whatever you do in life,
do the very best you can
with both your heart and mind.

And if you do it that way,
the Power Of The Universe
will come to your assistance,
if your heart and mind are in Unity.

When one sits in the Hoop Of The People,
one must be responsible because
All of Creation is related.
And the hurt of one is the hurt of all.
And the honor of one is the honor of all.
And whatever we do effects everything in the universe.

If you do it that way - that is,
if you truly join your heart and mind
as One - whatever you ask for,
that's the Way It's Going To Be.

Passed down from White Buffalo Calf Woman

If only our leadership possessed more of these qualities and beliefs?

When the whole world is set to go up in flames it become a moot point. I love the way this was explained though. Being a part of the wolf that wants peace and Love but also being hunted from above.

23. This is Indian Occultism - you need to follow the Leviticus laws
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 11:28 AM by bushmeat
After reading this I had to clean my soul according to Leviticus 1: 14 by burning a couple pigeons in my Weber. I plan to take the ashes to Church later.

"And if his offering to the LORD be a burnt-offering of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtle-doves, or of young pigeons."

Does anyone know how determine the age of a Pigeon? My soul is at stake here.

37. And which one are you feeding, DU reader?
I have seen people involved in politics - even the "correct side" - who tear themselves up with their politics. They are so upset about the political battle that they lose their capacity to enjoy life. In essence, they forget what exactly they are fighting for, so even if they win, they lose.

I have tried to remember that in everything I do, and I hope the people who read this thread also remember. Make sure you can still enjoy the fruits of victory by the time you achieve that victory.
