Aside from1962, has Cuba ever been a threat to the US/democracy?
I still hear the talk about how Fidel and Cuba is a threat to the US and democracy in the western hemisphere but I cant see any evidence of that other than the missle crisis of 1962. And we all know that the Soviets were responsible for that. After 47 years we still have an embargo and sanctions against Cuba. There was even some flak about letting Cuban baseball players enter the US to play in the WBC as a security risk.
Help me here. Has Cuba ever threatened the US other than with the missiles of 62?

3. Yes, absolutely.
Its very existence is a threat to the US for the example it shows the rest of Latin America: There is another way besides corporate capitalism.

We had to stamp out the Sandinistas for the same reason.

4. Heh! They're a bigger threat now than ever...
since Latin America is getting tired of taking our crap and all the leftist governments down there are looking to Castro as a soulmate.

After that Pakistani earthquake, Cuba sent 1,000 medical personnel to help out, probably funded by Venezuela. They stayed there through the winter when the rest of us pulled out.

Now, we have refused visas to 58 Cuban scholars for a seminar in Puerto Rico, prompting the association to boycott the US in the future.

Damn commie bastard-- making us look bad.

6. You need to understand that flak
about the baseball players. Afterall come tomorrow night Cuba will play Japan in the finals. Do you have any idea how embarrassing this is to Pappy Bush, Mummy Bush and DumbBush?

Cuba has never been a threat to the US.

14. I look forward to watching that game.
But how would the outcome, whichever way it's decided, be an embarrassment to anyone?

8. 1898?

America won without too much difficulty, but if things had been sufficiently different then it might have lost...

13. Wait a second...
I thought we started a war to "liberate" the Cubans from the horrible Spanish, and we did it based on a lie, that the Maine was blown up by Spanish mines. Damn a lot of parellels to the Iraq War there.

22. My understanding

(based on 15 minutes of internet research) is that that's essentially accurate, but it's not completely beyond the bounds of probability that the worm cuold have turned in some way. There certainly was a war involving America and Cuba in 1898, which must constitute *some* degree of threat, albeit negligable.

23. Actually, my little summary was somewhat accurate...
The Maine's boiler apparently blew while in or near the dock for Havana, however, before anyone could figure out what happened, Hearst-owned papers, at his personal behest, started blaming the Spanish, at the same time also claiming that the Cubans were rising in rebellion against the Spanish, while the Spanish themselves were vilified for atrocities against the Cubans. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your point of view, due to public pressure, Congress declared war, and "liberated" the Cubans, though, in reality, they simply changed to another imperial hands, this is also when we acquired Puerto Rico and the Phillipines. This was after the war, the Spanish losing what little colonies they had left to us. They were in decline for centuries and couldn't really stand up to the US war machine, over the long term at least. Now, the Cubans actually didn't mind us going in to begin with, hence why, almost 50 years later, a guy from Cuba, by the name of Fidel Castro, almost made it into the New York Yankees, to bad they didn't take him up on that offer. :)

The Phillipines were another story, we held onto them a long time after we installed a puppet over Cuba's government, we pacified the Phillipines, killing well over 150,000 men, women, and children. I remember finding a US postage stamp that was from the Phillipines around this time period, one of a few remaints of our imperialistic ambitions. Remember, the Phillipines were a US territory during WWII, and part of the reason why we were surprised at the Pearl Harbor attack, thinking they would attack the much closer Phillipines instead.

9. Cuba is a Huge Threat
If Americans could go to Cuba and see how beautiful it is and find out how friendly the Cubans are, the tourism industry in Miami would suffer greatly!

Cuba is much safer and more interesting than Miami - any day!!

10. look at how folks were convinced by the reaganites that
Nicaragua was a threat... that the Soviets would use Nicaragua to march through Mexico and launch a campaign against us... oh ya, and completely ignoring that the Soviets were going bankrupt and couldn't economically take it on (let alone the whole ludicrious notion in the first place).

I doubt they even would have bothered with the missles if we would have just left them alone.
