From a local columnist here in Winston-Salem. She always does great work and really nails the essence of Moyers' lecture.

Season for Heresy
Moyers issues impassioned call for some real 'old-time' religion

By Linda Brinson
EDITORIAL PAGE EDITOR

Like an Old Testament prophet, Bill Moyers was impassioned and eloquent when he spoke in Wait Chapel at Wake Forest University Tuesday morning. Fueled by righteous indignation and armed with powerful examples, he railed about the wrongs he sees and exhorted those gathered for a chapel service sponsored by the divinity school to take action to make things right. His was a voice in the wilderness of an America gone astray, issuing a clarion call for good people to work together to save their democracy. <snip>

1. Bill Moyers always has a way of boiling things down to their essence
<snip>

The political strategy, he said, was to "saddle our nation with structural deficits that will last until our children's children are ready to retire" so that government will eventually be unable to do much more than "wage war and reward privilege." To make that happen, they first had to "neutralize the independent media" and substitute a "propaganda machine." And they flooded "their coffers with rivers of money from those who stand to benefit from the transfer of public resources to elite control."

And the religious strategy, Moyers said, was to "fuse ideology and theology" into a world view that allowed no compromise, to claim that America is "God's favored among nations and therefore beyond critique or challenge, turn their pews into precincts, talk about charity instead of justice, and demonize their opponents as ungodly and immoral."

<snip>

RIGHT ON! This is where the battle lies.

This kinda thing is why I supported Howard Dean - not afraid to tell it like it is...

4. Holy Crap! The only thing wrong with that link
is that there should be somewhere to get access to Moyers' entire talk. Wow! His bit about "the religion of Jesus" versus "the religion about Jesus" speaks volumes about where so much of Christianity has gone wrong.
I ache to think that Moyers, like so many admirable Democrats, is in his seventies and has only so much time left to teach us. We have a duty to pick where he leaves off (which I hope won't be for a long time).
