46 Republicans just voted (on March 16) to privatize Social Security
Did you know that on March 16 a Social Security privatization budget amendment was narrowly defeated in the Senate? I didn't, until I ran across a Daily Kos article just now. Funny, how something this big can make it in under the radar. The Corporate News Oligopoly was silent on the issue, of course.

True to their Bizarro World form, the pukes named the measure the exact opposite of what they are really trying to achieve: The Stop the Raid on Social Security Act.

Remember, this was in the budget recommendation that Dubya sent to Congress. Some folks thought that wasn't a cause for worry, but his scheme to gut Social Security almost made it into the Senate version of the budget bill.

Every single Democrat voted against the amendment.

1. Hell in a hand basket
Is there no deed too dastardly for them to embrace? They know their constituents were against privatization by a large margin, so obviously they are no longer even making a pretense of representing the people.

3. This privatization vote is potentially serious ammunition for November
And there's plenty of other ammo to use. Honest, with the proper resources I think I could get Charles Manson elected in November if I ran him as a Democrat, and if the election were fair.

But think with me about this: Most lately with this arrogant maneuver, do you think the pukes are behaving like they do not fear voters' retribution?

10. RealPlayer Version Works...
Lasher -

The RealPlayer version of the video works fine. Looks like the Windows Media version (which was on another server) has become inaccessible.

We'll try to fix that shortly so the the WMV link works again.

Will try to add a Flash version as well, given the "timelessness" of that particular video :-)

7. It's hard to tell what their political calculations were on this issue.
It's likely that they knew they didn't have enough votes to win, therefore, the defeated proposal would then quietly fade away. No harm, no foul.

8. I wouldn't be surprised if they try it again and again until they succed.
That's how these thugs work. They can't stop til they've got it all! If every single democrat voted to filibuster Alito or block the bankruptcy bill or, or, or...they would have succeeded at those endeavors also. When will they show some spine on these other issues and actually serve their constituents?

Check out my post #23 below. If we don't regain control of at least one house of Congress this year, Social Security as we know it is dead.

Why wasn't this talked up? Where was our dear Senator's talking this up or was it one of those things that just turn up on the floor to be voted on? I wonder of the Vice was in for the vote? If he gets near Congress we just have to worry what these slimy guys will pull.

15. STOP THE RAID ON SOCIAL SECURITY??? WTF??
These people are truly insane. Nevermind that they're the ones who RAIDED it, in the first place. Then, they want to hand the rest out to Wall Street. Even IF their philosophy is sound -- who was raiding it, in the first place? The REPUBLICAN-LED FEDERAL GOVERNMENT.

What. the. fuck.

23. Look out, another attack against Social Security was launched on March 16
Edited on Mon Mar-20-06 10:35 AM by Lasher
Senator Jim DeMint (R-Of Course) is the one who introduced the Stop the Raid on Social Security Act that I mentioned above. If truth in labeling laws applied to legislation, this would have been called the Social Security Privatization Act of 2006. This measure has not been introduced this year as separate legislation, and therefore has no bill number. It was introduced last year, however, as S.1302, the Stop the Raid on Social Security Act of 2005.

Also on March 16, Senator Bob Bennett (R-They're Everywhere) introduced S. 2427, the Sustainable Solvency First for Social Security Act of 2006. This one should be called the Enormous Social Security Benefit Cut of 2006. It has been referred to the Finance Committee.

Privatization is not included in S. 2427. It provides progressive indexing (means testing) and accelerates increases in retirement age. Starting in 2012, beneficiaries would have to be age 67 to receive full benefits.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., opposes privatization and although Bennett's bill does not include that, he still cannot support it, said Reid's spokesman Jim Manley.

"The bill proposes enormous benefits cuts for many middle-class beneficiaries," Manley said.
