6. Glad to see it's "midst" and not "middle"
Because they've just started down the road to horror and bloodshed -- wouldn't want to try to fool anyone that half the dying's already been done. There's LOTS more to come.

If people are getting killed by a bunch of other people from their own country week after week, I'd say you have a civil war. But, hey, I'm no political analyst or anything.
