Lawmakers get out of the House
House of Representatives expected to be in session only 97 days this year.

WASHINGTON — The House of Representatives is on track this year to be in session for fewer days than the Congress Harry Truman labeled as “do-nothing” during his 1948 re-election campaign.

Members of Congress are taking an entire week off for St. Patrick's Day. It's the latest scheduling innovation to give members more time to meet with constituents.

Through Friday, the House was in session for 19 days, compared with 33 for the Senate. If they stick to their current schedule — including two weeks off in April, a week in May and July, plus all of August — House members will spend 97 days in Washington this year.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Congressional salary = $165,200 per year.
$165,200 / 97 days = $1,703 per day!
2. Considering the general esteem in which the GOP is held
It's no wonder they're worried about constituent service! But knowing most Republicans, I don't think spending more time around the people they're shafting is going to do them much good. They're sort of the anti-Breck girls: The closer you get to them, the better they don't look.
3. The GOP can't find bills they know they can win
That's the problem. There's no shortage of things that have passed committee that they could bring up. They simply lack the organization and ability to win the votes, like what happened to the Democrats in 1994.
5. With the damage they've been doing being away may be not such a bad idea.
:grr:
Besides although I do agree that they're more then a bit over paid and I realize that some of this time (probbaly too much) will be spent on vacations I also realize that not all of the work they do is done while in session. Part of their job is supposedly getting out and hearing what their constituents are saying, see what is truly needed by their constituency and make contacts and arrangement in order to help get that to them. Also I'd rather my reps occasionally be available in a location where I might actually see one face to face then always hiding away in Washington.
7. "more time to meet with constituents"
Liars. More time to raise money. When was the last time congress acted on behalf of ordinary citizens? Medicare bill?
