Afghan Man Faces Death
Afghan Man Faces Death for Allegedly Converting to Christianity

Sunday , March 19, 2006

KABUL, Afghanistan — An Afghan man who allegedly converted from Islam to Christianity is being prosecuted in a Kabul court and could be sentenced to death, a judge said Sunday.

The defendant, Abdul Rahman, was arrested last month after his family went to the police and accused him of becoming a Christian, Judge Ansarullah Mawlavezada told the Associated Press in an interview. Such a conversion would violate the country's Islamic laws.

Apparently we are fighting for the same kind of 'liberation' and 'freedoms' we gave to the Kuwaitis after the first Gulf War with the added "bonus" of record Opium trade.

that the right leaning outlets are the only ones trumpeting this story. Of course it's reprehensible that someone could be arrested for professing their faith, but it seems to me that it shouldn't be a surprise to anyone given that region's track record on religious freedom.

I will go out on a limb and say it....these news outlets will ALWAYS find an excuse to demonize the enemy so the "people of faith" in this country will be angered by the "horrible Muslims, and this is nothing more than an attempt to hijack an already dangerous religious fervor
for a sinister agenda.

Let's wait and see what happens. Watch for the fundies to run their mouths about how Christians are being persecuted around the world and how evil the Muslim religion is....and they'll get LOTSA LOTSA $ when the smoke clears!

(edited for spelling)

4. What should the news outlets have done? Not report this story?

5. uh no.....just pointing out the fact....
that they seem to be the only ones trumpeting the story as a headline (I never mentioned anything about the wisdom of carrying the story one way or the other)...and I have a hunch as to why.

we've seen this before.

7. Here's another rightwing outlet trumpeting the story:
http://headlines.agapepress.org/archive/3/202006h.asp .

And, yes, not a day goes by where the "Conservative Christians" aren't blabbing about how bad the Muslim faith is.

10. As A Matter Of Curiousity, Sir
Do you agree with the proposition that a person who converts from Islam to Christianity should rightfully be put to death?

Do you imagine that freedom of conscience is not something valued by liberals, progressives, and leftists?

6. What surprises me
Is that we are in this country with soldiers still "fighting the terrorists and taliban regime" to "make that country free" and a man is being charged for this crime.

The news outlets need to report it but also look at how many soldiers, what government we removed and why the new government is better if it is killing a man for religious differences.

Lets get real news on this!

8. Yes.
If we have such good relations with the current government over there, why aren't we intervening on this man's behalf?

And, while I don't fault the media for reporting this, I AM higly suspicious of it being reported only on hardright websites.
