President Bush talks 'kerfuffle'

By NEDRA PICKLER
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

CLEVELAND -- President Bush is known as a plainspoken man, a straight-talker. So how did a word like "kerfuffle" come out of his mouth?

It's not an everyday word; it means a commotion or fuss. Bush casually used it during a question-and-answer session after a speech at the City Club here. Someone had asked about his administration's warrantless surveillance program, which has stirred concern about whether it exceeds the bounds of his authority and violates the law.

Saying the program had "created quite a kerfuffle in the press," Bush gave his rationale for authorizing it.

No question, the program has riled some Republicans and Democrats. But Bush may be the only politician who says it has caused a kerfuffle. An aide said he has heard Bush use the word privately before, but not in public.

3. Probably the most dismissive word he could come up with
to describe the press coverage of his crimes. He also denied ever having thought of the possibility of the Apocalypse coming soon, which can't possibly be true even if he doesn't believe in it himself. (He has powerful supporters who think about that quite often.) Then he lied about student loans. Typical Bush speech!

That's the monkeyboy's other secret favorite word: "Fabulous!"

"But all in all, it's been a fabulous year for Laura and me."
-- Shrub, Dec 2001

“And we’ll prevail, because we’re a fabulous nation, and we’re a fabulous nation because we’re a nation full of fabulous people.”
~ George W. Bush, Atlanta, GA, 2002-01-31

“I’m proud to be the President of a country where we’ve got such a fabulous city called New York City.”
~ George W. Bush, 2002-02-06, New York Sheraton Hotel reception for Governor Pakati

“But he’s got a fabulous record.”
~ George W. Bush, 2002-02-06, New York Sheraton Hotel reception for Governor Pakati

“It’s one of the fabulous parts of the job.”
~ George W. Bush, 2001-08-21, Harley Davidson Factory Lunch Room, Menomonoee Falls, Wisconsin

“He’s a man who loves his country, a man who is going to be a fabulous Secretary of State for America.”
~ George W. Bush, 2001-04-22, Quebec City, Quebec, Canada

“I put together a fabulous cabinet.”
~ George W. Bush, Green Bay WI, 2001-09-03, commenting on the fashion sense of his cabinet.

Apparently, it comes up almost 500 times in his speeches if you search www.whitehouse.gov.

Simply Fabulous!

9. Kerfuffle?
Lemme check the calendar... Yup. "Kerfuffle", the word of the day for March 20, 2006. Did he pause for emphasis after saying it? That's a dead giveaway.

12. Stolen from Clinton, I think...
I remember BC using it a time or two in his term and, curiously enough, news stories about him using such a strnage word then, too. Off to google.
