Parents Upset School Gave Kindergarteners Clorox
Parents Upset School Gave Kindergarteners Clorox

Products Were Given To Schools As Part Of Direct Marketing

POSTED: 11:22 am EST March 22, 2006
UPDATED: 12:06 pm EST March 22, 2006

GOLDEN, Colo. -- Products from the Clorox company arrived at Coal Creek Elementary in Golden with instructions to hand them out to parents.

But instead, school officials gave them directly to students, who range from kindergarteners to fifth-graders, reported KMGH-TV in Denver.

When the children came home with the items, some parents were very concerned.

The young students received samples of gel Clorox cleanup, disinfectant cleaner, and disinfectant wipes.

1. Holy Poison Control Batman!!
That has got to be the dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard of. Samples of gel Clorox clean-up...pretty green looking goo that's REALLY fun to play with. It looks like TOOTHPASTE for crying out loud!!!

I'd love to smack the brain-trust of school officials who thought handing out this stuff to Kindergarteners was a swell ideer.

3. I'd like to smack CLOROX for marketing to parents through their kids
at school, when the kids aren't supervised by these parents.

It's enough to make me buy the store brand of bleach.

6. This is the School's Fault
Each of the packages probably says not to let children have it unsupervised,
and the whole thing came with instructions to give out to parents.

Evidently the school officials need to take some remedial reading courses.

9. You don't get it: Why is CLOROX marketing through schools?
They have advertising on TV. radio, magazines, other media. They can give out free samples and coupons anywhere adults congregate, like grocery stores. WHY sneak marketing of a non-kid product in through little kids? Why have ANY marketing of commercial products at schools?

And the execs at Clorox should have considered the possibility that their product might be mishandled. They are not selling chocolate bars, they are selling a lethal substance. Maybe a school, where an enterprising kid or two might get hold of the products in any number of ways, isn't the best place to market a lethal substance.

16. I totally agree.
Children go to school to LEARN,
not to be a captive audience for
corporate mass-marketing campaigns.

This is WRONG on several levels; and
someone needs to do some serious explaining.

18. It Wasn't Supposed to be Given to the Children
It was supposed to be given to the parents.

19. Companies often market through schools districts & it's total Bullshit

When I was teaching, Rubbermaid made a deal with the district's employee Wellness Program (basically a program that if you are overweight by insurance standards, smoke and/or have high blood pressure, you WILL be docked $10/month from your paycheck...but that's a whole 'nother rant...).

Anyway, one day a huge Rubbermaid food storage container appeared in my school mailbox. Turns out the Wellness Program made a deal for a huge monetary "contribution" by Rubbermaid to the program AND it was approved by my teachers' union. the storage container had a "pleasant" note taped to it about what we teachers need to remember to eat in terms of fresh fruits and veggies and what better to remember than to have a container we can use and be able to SEE the good food so we DO remember to feed ourselves in the best way possible. :puke:
And this deal was made by our teachers' union all without including, consulting, informing or allowing a voice in the choice by it's paying members, the teachers. Many of us were really pissed and made verbal and written complaints to our union and the district.

So re: the Clorox products

Probably that school district made a deal to pass out Clorox products as part of a monetary deal with the district and approved by the board of supervisors there. Part of the deal between the district and Clorox also may include the district getting a "deal" on Clorox products (...these deals usually result in districts paying more money than if products were purchased elsewhere...) to use in cleaning and maintenance of the district buildings. However, to pass these things out to students was absolutely stupid on the part of the teachers, and could result in complaints and lawsuits of incompetence in regard to student health and safety, and could increase the district's insurance premiums...and gee...this could have a backlash on teacher salaries re: reduction in the per annum pay increase and/or their insurance premiums.

10. This is the corporation's fault.
They print "caution" on the label and then think they're absolved of responsibility for their poisonous products. Sorry. Just another reason corporations need to leave their grubby paws off our schools.

2. Oh yeah, the principal's got some 'splainin' to do.
There are probably all sorts of zero tolerance policies in place to keep the little darlings from hurting each other, but Clorox gel isn't on the list. Yet.

11. The principal should have passed entirely on this stealth marketing
campaign. Did the school district make a deal for a discount on cleaning supplies if they pushed Clorox products on the parents through the kids?

I would have thrown the crap out. Let Clorox pay for their marketing and not use the public schools for that purpose.

13. I like it especially if there are coupons. Helps with germs in school
and maybe save the family some money. The family will still buy what is on sale.
