Savage: American Imperialism over Muslim imperialism
Christ what a nutcase, from Media Matters:

Americans must "choose between American imperialism and Muslim imperialism." He warned that if Muslim imperialism is not defeated, "a thousand years of darkness" would ensue under Muslim rule, adding, "So, if I have to make a choice between American imperialism and Muslim imperialism, I'll tell you which side I'm on."

Gee if I had a choice I'd chosse... um... FREEDOM over Imperialism. Asshole.

1. Muslim imperialism? How many Muslim countries have invaded
other countries? OK, in recent history. 1000 years of darkness? What does he think 1000 years of people like * running this country would look like. Where do people get these ideas???

8. Muslim imperialism may not be the correct word, but he has a point.
Here's a link that explains much better than I can.

http://atheism.about.com/od/islamicextremism/a/daralharb.htm

Dar al-Harb vs. Dar al-Islam

"More importantly, perhaps, is the fact that "war" is also descriptive of the relationship between dar al-harb and dar al-islam. Muslims are expected to bring God's word and God's will to all of humanity, by force if absolutely necessary, and attempts by the regions in dar al-harb to resist or fight back must be met with a similar amount of force. While the general condition of conflict between the two may stem from the Islamic mission to convert, specific instances of warfare are believed to be always due to the immoral and disordered nature of dar al-harb regions."

3. Muslims just want OUR imperialism ended
remove our money & culture from their retarted part of the planet.

But what they don't realize is that the Spectacle is not Imperialism, and we in the West are powerless in its grip, too.

If Guy Debord were still around, he could clue them the fuck in. Not that they'd listen.

6. That's how imperialism works...
No sane country ever sets out to build an empire. It's something that sneaks up on you.

First you invade a neighbor, for what seem like good reasons at the time. There's a resistance movement, rebels supplied from another country/ies. Eventually you get fed up with this and invade them too. And now you've got ever-more ordinary, hardworking people who look to you to protect them from their neighbors. And your border is getting longer and your neighbors are getting pissed. So you have to keep them under control, which occasionally means invading them too.

Until one day, you wake up and realize you're an empire.

To be fair, it's not only Republicans who've been building the American Empire since 1945. Kennedy, Johnson and Clinton all did their bit. But it's only now that the American people are starting to notice what's happened to them.

"The conquered mourns, the conqueror is undone." - Latin proverb

10. my point is that we don't control the aspects of our cultural imperialism
Edited on Wed Mar-22-06 09:12 PM by maxsolomon
that muslim fundies object to; objectificiation of women, corruption of youth, tawdry products, the removal of the divine from the quotidian. they look back, like american taliban members do, to an imagined utopian period that never existed. america can't stop what it is doing to the planet; it can't stop doing it to itself. the destruction of a connection to nature, to the divine, to any experience that is not commercialized. OBL is right to object, and so is Adbusters.

as to our "empire"; previous empires at least prided themselves on governing their vassal states properly. we've never given a fuck about that, nor, i contend, are we capable. we are a cultural & economic empire only. that is one of the Idjit's & his neocon influencer's fatal errors; we have no interest in occupation or administration. solely exploitation.

7. Being an imperialist gets your kids killed and costs $. Let them do it
Used to be, imperial powers MADE money off their empire. But nooooooo, not the US. We're losing money so fast and men so fast, I'd be thrilled to let some other country take over the entire business and let us sit back and tut tut during longer and richter lives.
