Low Income Parents of High Schools Students-Free Tuition

For any low income parents of high school student who could possible get into the elite colleges there is a bit of good news for you. You might want to encourage you kid to apply to Stand, Harvard, Princeton, and/or University of Pennsylvania. A few days ago Stanford announced that for the student who came from families earning up to $45,000 a year would pay no tuition at all. Students from families making up to $60,000 will only have to pay about $3,800. It seems the program for Stanford has been around for a few years, but they decided to reduce the cost for the two groups of families. At Harvard any student from a family making up to $40,000 a year will have free tuition.

I think this is a great program that the Democratic Party should take up. They should expand it to just about all schools. I think that would cause many more kids to graduate from college.

Only a handful can get into those schools...

I did a google search using to words Stanford and free tuition for low income students. An article from CNN which had the date of March 16, 2006. You can go to Rachel Maddow's website. I heard about the University of Pennsylvania through her show today, which prompted me to search for Stanford.

if the schools have a choice between a non-paying and paying candidate I would think they would still select the paying one.

My other question is, what about room and board, do they still ahve to pay for that?

I think kids at stanford have to still pay for room and board, but from what I heard on Rachel Maddow this morning kids a University of Pennsylvania do not have to pay room and board either. I do not know about the other schools.

and a few others (Stanford, MIT, CalTech, etc) have gaurenteed Cost of Attendence (COA) financial aid. The COA includes tuition, books, room, board, etc.

The total package may include a fair amount of loans, but not unbearably so. I would definately encourage anyone with the ability to apply.
