Michelle Malkin Condemns Domenech Plagiarism - ROFL
http://michellemalkin.com/archives/004834.htm

I just got home from Pittsburgh and am late heading out the door for the Abdul Rahman event in D.C., but I can't let this blog sit silent about the plagiarism debacle now engulfing young conservative Ben Domenech, the Washington Post's "Red America" blogger.

I cheered for Ben, the editor of my last book at Regnery, when he announced his new position. I criticized unhinged bloggers on the Left who leveled vicious ad hominem attacks against him. It's clear, as the good folks at Red State (which Ben co-founded) note, that his detractors were on a search-and-destroy mission from the get-go.

But now the determined moonbat hordes have exposed multiple instances of what clearly appear to me to be blatant lifting of entire, unique passages by Ben from other writers. It is one thing to paraphrase basic facts from a wire story. But to filch the original thoughts and distinctly crafted phrases of a writer without crediting him/her--and doing so repeatedly--is unacceptable in our business. Some of the cases occurred while Ben was in college; he is blaming an editor for these transgressions. But at least one other incident involved a piece he wrote for NRO after he graduated. The side-by-side comparisons of these extensive passages is damning.

I certainly understand the impulse on the Right to rally around Domenech. But I can't ignore the plain evidence. And the charges can't be dismissed as "lies" or jealousy attributed to Ben's age.

I cannot imagine the mindset of someone who would actually lay out that kind of money to have a picture taken with him...:silly:

The Post most likely want someone coherent (even if they have to settle for plagiarists) and that eliminates Michelle.

We Must Defend.

It's true. Ben Domenech is Augustine. And I stand behind him 100%. He has said nothing filled with racism or hate, or bigotry. In fact, Ben has been a leader in keeping those he dubs the "evilcons" off RedState. Unbeknownst to all of you, RedState continually self-polices and purges its own ranks of those who might be allies, but are too filled with hate to function in the internet society we choose to create. We would not without Ben's insistence at the creation of RedState be so self-policing.
Ben is accused of being a racist, gay, homophobe, an incestuous lover of his own mother, a partisan, evil, and now a plagarist. He is, according to the left, a right wing Stephen Glass who gets his jollies off with his mother. Only Stephen Glass could actually make that up -- or a jealous group of haters. The lies told, from charges of plagarism to ties to Jack Abramoff are hyperbolic lies. There are no facts or truths related to any of these charges. They are meant to destroy a good and decent human being because of hate and jealousy.

Those blogs attacking the Washington Post and Ben are so hate filled and envious, they refuse to accept Froomkin as one of their own. That's one reason they continue to lose the debate -- the reality based community denies reality. It's another reason they are disingenous in this argument. Horror of horrors they now have to share the Washington Post's blog with Ben. How terrible.

For a group of people who yell at my side saying we censor them, jail them, and otherwise silence them, who now is censoring, silencing, and viciously, irrationally attacking? It's not Ben. It's not me. it's not my side. His WaPo posts have been measured, reasonable, and pointed. In fact, no one on the other side has bothered to take on his posts -- they are too busy attacking Ben and his family.

In the process these people are shooting in the foot bloggers across the board -- shutting down opportunities to advance into the mainstream media that many of us on the left and right would otherwise have. Here is a guy who got started in the blogosphere and moved toward the mainstream media only to get savagely assailed from the other side. Should these people succeed, how many bloggers from either side will ever again get so far? I would suspect none -- not when there are people closer to the media who would fit the bill. The media, already skeptical of both the left and right side of the blogosphere, gets to watch us all tear each other apart over something that would otherwise be insignificant. What media company would want to take the risk of a blogswarm? And the media gets to reaffirm its own self-image as the rational arbiters of news and opinion -- clearly 1606 must be defeated. Look at this example as another reason why -- bloggers are too immature to handle such freedom -- they must be regulated.

cont'd...

16. The first paragraph says something very telling.
RedState continually self-polices and purges its own ranks of those who might be allies, but are too filled with hate to function in the internet society we choose to create.

Some would-be RedStaters are apparently TOO filled with hate. Is there an appropriate level of hatred then?

The rest of it is the usual bunch of caterwauling wherein a pampered conservative brat cries that mean people are persecuting him. "Censoring" his friend's writing by exposing it as plagiarism.
Ha!

Plagiarism Accusations Leveled at New Post Blogger
By Justin Rood - March 24, 2006, 12:08 PM

What's going to happen to the Washington Post's new blogger? We're trying to find out ourselves, but folks who know have gone to ground.

The blogosphere put on its research hat yesterday and dug up at least half a dozen instances of apparent plagiarism by Ben Domenech, the conservative blogger whose recent hiring by the Washington Post sparked a firestorm in the blog world.

DailyKos has some examples, and then some; Atrios has a few more -- oh, and more.

We've been calling the Washingtonpost.com to find out what its thinking on their new hire is, but they haven't gotten back to us. Domenech himself has not yet replied to our email.

15. Malkin ought to check her facts
I don't believe that this home schooled guy graduated from William and Mary. It is said he dropped out after his junior year. Some may find that intriguing.

Malkin said

Heh, and I wonder about the home schooling deal also. Obviously his home teacher may have had a lot to do with it. Never having to compete with others in a classroom situation, never having to be called on his writing by anyone including a public school teacher whose objective must be more comprehensive than his Mom, perhaps he never learned that copying verbatim from some web site or obscure newspaper, was cheating. Ot maybe she never caught him at it, but thought he was coming along just fine with all these magnificient diatribes. My son---he is so smart.

17. Ohhh....well, the Post will certainly listen now. . .
since their executive editor has made it rather clear that the company is only interested in hearing from the Right - and that those opinions are the only ones worthy of bandwidth in their online newspaper.

After all, wasn't Brady's decision about hiring Doofus centered around his own assumptions of what represents the "social conservative" point of view, which apparently means anyone who basically throws a middle-school style temper tantrum and denounces anyone else who attempts to portray their opinion in a similar manner?

What the Post seems to miss is that they have now admitted the Right basically defines what is "conservative" and "liberal". . .and that no one else has any say in who or how people identify except the Right.
I just have no use for such crap.

Dear Michelle,
Why not give "the determined moonbat hordes" credit for exposing the fraud without calling them names? Would it kill you to admit that people on the left aren't crazy, unhinged masses? Do you feel it would have been better to let him rise in prominence in the conservative community, plagiarizing as he goes?
Just asking.

24. Tit for tat, ya know,
I mean, bloggers were "legitimized" when some tipped-off blogger "exposed" the remote possibility that a document proving George W. Bush's attendance to his sworn duty might have been faked due to elaborate machinations . . .

So, when leftie bloggers expose righties for being outrageously and blatantly hypocritical/illegal/corrupt, the righties shouldn't be complaining too loudly . . .

27. Yes, but like all spoiled, whiny brats, they didn't think that anyone else
would be using the internets to expose frauds. That's their problem. They get into power and institute laws that they never think will eventually affect them. They are unable to think beyond their own needs ~ the level at which they function is probably around two-years old.

I just found out, thanks to Michelle Malkin, that I'm part of a 'horde of moonbats'!! I like that!

Best-going theory is that Domenech knew he was getting canned, and let them know ahead of time, so that they could "walk back" from him. End result: the rightwing bloggers get to say "look, we told him to resign, he resigned, showing great character".

It was a "staged morality event".
