6. OTOH, that keeps the people he's trying to reach out to interested
People will only listen to your opinion if they believe you are like them. Since Shultz tries to make white, outdoors-type males the base of his audience, this kind of thing lets his listeners know that he's "one of them". I don't think it's a waste of time.

41. Thank YOU!
Ed Shultz serves a great purpose. While he's not 100% in lock step with the progressive "agenda" (I hate that word) ..... he IS reaching out to the blue collar type that REALLY should be voting Democratic.

Not EVERY left radio show should be following a script of talking points.

Come on y'all ...... we are NOT republicans!

We NEED the converts.. we need the moderates.. we need those democrats that Howard Dean tried to embrace and was attacked for. He speaks to the blue collar voters, whom we DESPERATELY need. Like it or not, America has gone WAAAY over toward the blue-color, good ol' boy, way of thinking. That's how a putz like Bush could get elected.

47. What's the "blue-collar way of thinking" and why is it bad?
Cultural leftism, divorced from blue-collar roots, is an oxymoron.

Anything on the left should be considered blue collar BY DEFINITION.

Everyone who claims to be on the left and has no blue collar roots or ties, or even cultural affinity with blue collar people, must apparently not have been affected by the Reagan-Clinton-Bush Economy and have no real connection to left issues.

First the pseudo-leftists throw the blue-collar whites overboard, next they turn on the poor and start ignoring them, too. I've seen it in my "blue" hometown. It's been going on since the late eighties.

The only 2 country albums you'll find in my place are the Dixie Chicks and an old "Willie and Friends" album. I'm more likely to listen to Mozart than Merle, Tchaikovsky than Travis.

I don't eat chitlin's, nor own a CB radio, either. No Coon Dawg, sorry. "Gitter-Dun" is not in my vocabulary.

"Good Ol' Boy"? S'Yeah. Ri-i-i-i-i-i-ght....

But I DO live in a "Red State".

Personally, I find Chomsky to be nothing more than a whiny blowhard (ditto for Rhodes and Malloy), but that must be because I'm from Indiana, and therefore stupid.

Maybe liberals should refuse to find enjoyment in anything that "undesirable", "unenlightened" blue-collar folks like to talk about.

To the extent that liberalism is a creation of the upper middle class, it is unsustainable. There are other types of lefties and libertarians who refuse to be bound by upper-middle-class strictures.

10. I get annoyed by it too, but I think it's a good thing
I love it when Democrats show that the right doesn't have a monopoly on sports, and the outdoors. It busts a very negative stereotype about Democrats, which may be what motivates him. It's frustrating, but I think it's good for moderate Republicans and independent listeners to know that we aren't deficient in these activities. It makes us less alien, and less threatening to them.

Many people think the Democrats are out of touch with the average Joe. Ed speaks to that... and does it really well. He busts every myth of the latte sipping, volvo driving, elitist, that we are ALWAYS made out to be in a negative way.

I know it's a shock to some on DU, but LOTS of democrats LOVE sports and fishing. YOu want to win a red state? Hosts like Randi Rhodes aren't gonna do it for us.

12. I LOVE Ed.. and everyone here should worship the guy...
before you get your panties in a wad, Big Ed is the #1 progressive talk show host in America. He appeals to the moderates and the republican converts. If you think for a moment that we will ever win anything again, in this equally divided country, WITHOUT the moderates and the party-switchers, then you're sadly mistaken.

We need Ed because he appeals to so many different types of people... I frankly can't stomach Randi Rhodes and some of the others because they project no daily life depth to their shows.. is as though you think she walks around all day screeching at people. Ed appeals because he talks about a variety of things. He's a pick-up truck Democrat kind of guy. I happen to like him a lot because he's different.

22. Ed doesn't go deep enough with issues when compared to Randi
In my opinion, Randi sounds like she reads a lot in her down time and works it into her show. Ed on the other hand doesn't go deep enough with the issues. The one thing I do like about Ed is how he can get a lot of "A-List" politicians to call in which is something all progressive shows should have the ability to do.

to do with my point that the poster hs alot of fucking nerve demanding that I worship this guy who seems to think that Lieberman is a great Democrat. I love Randi, I don't expect anyone to "worship" her. And yes I've listened to the show, and every time I do Ed does or says something I disagree with. So no I don't spend alot of time with him. I also don't berate people who like him. Nice try though.

On edit- Also I don't see that we have to bend over to moderates and "converts" screw that. It's like all this love for Lou Dobbs I've been seeing lately. The man has bad mouthed liberals and progressives for over 5 years now and I'm supposed to start liking him because he finally figured out that if Bush remains in office his portfolio will end up not being worth the paper it's printed on.

53. Because I've heard 2 interviews Ed did with Lieberman
and in both interviews Ed never once stood up to him on any issue. Both interviews were softball bullshit jobs that could have easily been done by Hannity or Matthews. I judge a person by their actions not by what they say, and if "Big Ed" doesn't like Lieberman then he should have had the balls to stand up to him in his interviews. Now I will say that both of these were done last year, and after the second one I stopped listening so if he's done another that I missed lately fine, but I highly doubt it.

52. The sad thing is...
There are a whole passel of elitists trying to take over the Democratic Party. They don't like sports, or blue-collar stuff in general, but they LOVE Starbucks, free trade, looking strong on national defense to appeal to "9-11 moms", the whole shebang. In the past they would have voted Republican, and many still would, if they weren't uncomfortable with Repub views on social issues. They live in posh Victorian coastal enclaves and proudly display multicultural symbols and attend town hall meetings to complain about non-white non-residents coming into their community to murder and steal. They are, in a word, Rockefeller Democrats.

but, many people in the "flyover states" are put off by Hollywood Democrats and their elite social circles. It frightens them, and makes them feel talked down to. They hate pretention of any sort. Ed can have massive appeal for these people. He scores high in the "I'd like to have a beer with that guy" category. The Dems sorely need this.

37. I agree, I love E's show. He hasn't quit on the Domestic Spying issue
and has great guests who he lets talk most of the time, like Sen. Feingold eg.

I've been listening to him for the past hour or so, and I haven't heard a word about fishing, so he must do a few minutes in the beginning of his show about sports, which is fine. I can imagine lots of moderates seeing him as a regular guy they could go fishing with, and discuss politics with, and maybe change their minds about a few things.

Today, he's mentioned the Domestic Spying topic several times. He says there will be a hearing next friday conducted by Arlen Specter. He's 100% behind Feingold because he really believes Bush is guilty of a crime.

He's reasonable and he's willing to learn about issues he might not know about, and sort of learns them along with the listeners sometimes, which is good.

29. I have a love-hate relationship with Ed
There's no denying that he gets great guests, and I really do think he connects with more moderate and less informed Dems. I also appreciated how he championed (and still champions) Cindy Sheehan, even becoming one of the first radio hosts to actually go out to Central Texas during Cindy's vigil.

But I became infuriated with Ed when he excoriated John Murtha for saying that kids shouldn't join up with the military right now, because they'd be shipped off to a war of folly in Iraq. Ed thought that Murtha's comment was crossing the line. I thought Ed should go jump in the lake, and I was so mad that I wrote him an e-mail saying I would never listen to him again.

Ed, since then, has graciously acknowledged the massive amounts of hate e-mail he got over that stupid comment (although I don't think he ever really backed down or apologized). And since then, he's also continued to bring on great guests and ask them good questions that I would ask. (Wes Clark is a frequent guest.) Ed also does a great job shutting down wingnut callers. He calls them out and picks their arguments apart without being obnoxious and/or rude, which even Randi and Mike Malloy have trouble with sometimes.

So I don't know what to say. I love Ed Schultz. I hate him too, sometimes.

Ed's show is not about out-lefting the other pundits. What he does do, and he does this well, is present a mainstream view of politics that consistently runs counter to the neo-con agenda. He's running a show for moderates with a professional touch that's missing from a lot of what I hear on AAR. What he lacks in devotion and sincerity, he more than makes up for in savvy and approachability.

Ed is an asset, whether or not you personally like his show.

35. I agree with you. Ed appeals to those who are not far-left
leaning, or who still lean to the right (though not the far-right). I think about my two brothers, both of whom voted for Bush. If I were going to try introducing them to "un-Bush" talk radio, Ed would be the first person I would think of. Randi and Mike Malloy would be way too much for them, but Ed wouldn't. They would be able to relate to his stories about fishing, and such, and in so doing, would perhaps listen to the political things he has to say. Ed is the every-man who IS reaching moderates, and Republicans who are fed up with that Bushco is doing.

43. Look, what we need is a RANGE of voices
I like Ed. I like Randi. I like Malloy. I Like Al. I Like Radio for Peace International, for that matter. Why? Because ALL of them represent a legitimate viewpoint, and one that we should respect and consider when we talk to the people. There's a range of people in the US, not just one type-we need to talk to that range, not just one group.

I DON'T LIKE Rush. I DON'T LIKE O'Reilly. I DON'T LIKE Hannity, or any of the Right Wing shills. Why? Because every one of them does nothing but lie in order to both trick the public out of their best interests and to make certain that they are rewarded by their Republican owners. They have nothing but contempt for the average person that they actively try to brainwash. They are the ones we need to fight, not Ed, or Randi, or anyone else on our side.

I'm in the car. However, I don't see sport casters interjecting household tips or political messages in their shows and I resent it when it happens to non-sports shows. David Letterman use to irritate me with this. I guess guys who like sports think everybody does. We who don't care about sports try to find refuge like on Monday night football and Super bowl that isn't sports and resent having sports dropped on us anyway.
