Poll question: How many DUers protest on the Iraq War anniversary?
This poll is in response to another post regarding the half-million people who demonstrated in Los Angeles yesterday regarding the propose immigration bill. The people demonstrating woud be directly impacted by any such legislation. The number of people demonstrating against the war and/or the * administration remains low compared to the Viet Nam era when the Americans were subject to the draft. What will it take to get Americans into the streets? Reinstated draft? (We know that will get the youth out.) An attack on Iran? What will it take to get Americans to protest *Co?

Demonstrations were held last weekend in cities, both large and small, on Saturday and Sunday of last week. Did you participate?

2. I Was At A Poverty Summit
Right down the street were demonstations. I joined in as soon as I was finished.

Since I work with poverty and am reminded every day how the cost of war takes from our own citizens, I will continue to "protest" every chance I get. I will do this by raising everyone's conscience (especially my representatives) about how this meaningless war causes so much tragedy at home. Right now for instance, while the nation looks away at the war, we are facing workfare for the poor ~ undermining union jobs and the minimum wage, as it already has in several states. The new legislation passsed will try to "punish" states who are not adhering to their policies. Mysteriously (NOT!) they are being very secretive about what their policies will be and mark my words they will release them quietly so as not to embarrass the legislators who voted for them.

One thing is clear in the legislation just passed: by withholding social service money, if they can keep us looking in Iraq maybe we won't notice the crumbling of families, livable wages, educational opportunities and community infrastructure over here. Maybe we won't see how they keep raising perks for the rich and corporations who are investing their employment, time, and money overseas in the name of the bottom dollar rather than America. Meantime, American private industries in Iraq alone have "misplaced" as much if not more money than the entire DSHS budget and the media has not made a peep about it.

Your tax dollars at work.
