Rep. Clay to Bush: "...why haven't your girls enlisted?"
http://explorefortruth.blogspot.com/2006/03/no-he-didnt.html

No, he didn't...?

Yes, he did! (reportedly)

Rep. William Lacy Clay Jr. of Missouri. He called for the removal of our troops from Iraq. That is not all he said.

"President Bush took this country to war by choice, not because we had to fight but because he wanted a fight," Clay said, according to a text of the speech he gave Monday at St. Louis Community College at Meramec in Kirkwood.

"I have a question for President Bush," said Clay, who voted against the resolution authorizing Bush to go to war in Iraq. "If you really believe that the war that you started in Iraq is a fight to defeat terrorism and to defend our freedoms, why haven't your girls enlisted?"

The Walker family is where the big money came from. The Bushes were the animated, up-front, frat-boys that took that money and used it for political gain.

50. Pierce
is actually descended from the Percy's of Northumberland. I know because so is my husband's family, we are also Pierce's. Bab's is a cousin removed x-amount of times. We're both related to President Franklin Pierce. One of the most famous Percy's was nicknamed "Hotspur". He had one hell of a temper, and was a rather bloody man. They were Earls of Northumberland. In fact, the family castle is called Alnwick, it's the same castle that Harry Potter was filmed at. Technically though, the male line of Percys actually died out, and the name carried through on a female descendant who had her husband take her name so that the name would continue.

I guess that's enough of the history lesson, I have over the past couple of years done quite a bit of research on the paternal line of my husband's family. I wish I had the info with me (I'm at work right now) but if anyone is interested in learning more, you can pm me, or most of the info is on line.

Yeah, I remember you. I hope you received all of my letters about what a terrible legislator you are.

Nice funny here, but you know what wasn't funny? Voting for the Child Abortion Notification Act, then saying you made that decision after choosing "to follow the leadership of your church on this issue." In addition to the fact that that's disgusting--your constituents are pro-choice. Almost all of them, in fact. My grandmother and two cousins among them. Yes, you're a comedian, alright. Oppressing women and justifying it as "just respecting good Christians" is sooooo hilarious.

36. In a free country
without the draft, what power does President Bush, or anybody, have to force someone to enlist? Is he responsible for their decisions? More importantly, are they responsible for his?

Have they expressed public support of the war? I missed it if it was reported.

I'm not defending Chimpy. I just think that 1) the argument is irrelevant to the larger issue of the war, 2) the girls are grown and neither he, nor they, are responsible for the other's decisions, and it is wrong to try and tar them with their father's brush, and 3) I think that it is bad PR. I may be mistaken on the last point, however.

I think this is below the belt, I'm afraid.

"Why haven't *you* enlisted" is *arguably* a legitimate challenge (although I personally would argue it isn't), but dragging Bush's or anyone else's family into it just makes one look bad.

40. Umm, I'm Active Duty Military, and I don't think they could pass the
waiver requirements. Maybe if we continue to lower the standards for enlistment, but with their alcohol abuse convictions, and documented police involvement, they would require, at a minimum, a waiver from the Area Recruiting Commander, and possibly, a waiver from the guy in charge of "all recruiting" activities. In the Navy, that would be the Commander, Navy Recruiting Command.

I'm speaking from experience. Most recruiters wouldn't waste their time. Too much paperwork involved in getting these waivers done.

Some "family values", eh? They've done such a good job raising their kids, even the Army doesn't want them.

And I'm not picking on the kids. They are the ones that want to throw "family values" in your face all the time.

I am so happy that this man came out and asked this question. It is about time that someone has come out and ask this question. Bush should also be asked why no member of his family has enlisted or joined the military. George P. Bush could easily join any branch of the military as a JAG officer, so why is he(George P. Bush) not in the military. In addition, what are all the other Bush children doing. You hear nothing about if they are helping make America a better place, so they all could join.

48. The answer: Patriotism is for suckers
Bush's America (or Grover Norquist's or whoever's) is not a democracy. The wealthy capitalists are the ruling elite. They reap the benefits of society and give the masses table scraps. The start the wars and send the children of the ghettos and barrios off to fight them while their children go Yale to prepare to perpetuate their wealth and hold on power.

That is why the son of George Bush, grandson of Prescott Bush, dodged the draft by ducking into a cushy National Guard unit and then only fulfilled his duty when it didn't conflict with more important things, like sex and drugs. That is why Dick Cheney as a student could join campus organizations that supported the war in Vietnam, but when it came to serving himself he had "other priorities".

60. Hehehe, gustsy ....
but I think there might actually be a more effective point to make.

I say this, in part, because most americans can understand girls not enlisting. Not to mention a lot of people are going to think there would be a lot of hassles for the military and secret service in handling this hypothetical enlistment.

So the more effective point that I think that could be made is this: None of the Bush family have ever volunteered to work at a USO or done the equivalent thereof.

I won't belabor the point, but many of us older DU types can remember seeing the countless popular culture examples of how the most beautiful stars of Hollywood used to volunteer their time during WWII. I'm only in my 40's but I've seen countless examples of that.

Those soldiers looked really grateful of those efforts.

I think people will get that point better: The Bush twins haven't danced a single dance or handed out a single donut for these troops.

I'd like to see a photo of one of those beautiful WWII era starlets doing her duty with the caption going something like "Are the twins too good for this?"

or the same image but in a split screen with the twins and the caption ...

"During a real war everyone pitches in. Even the famous and privileged."

I think that this could be effective and it's also fair. Bushco doesn't like to remind people of wars that involved pain and sacrifice.

64. Better question. Why isn't Pierce "Democrats are racists" Bush over there?
Asking girls to go fight for freedom doesn't really play well to the intended audience. But I would like to see nephew Pierce sign up and save us from, um, whoever is getting called a terrorist this week.

71. Bush tried to advance them to the top of the Nat'l Guard waiting list...
...In accordance with the old family tradition of course. Only no one's waiting anymore. Wonder why? Then he remembered that, given his troop deployment policy, it'd be a surefire one-way ticket to Iraq. No way, not his girls. Mission aborted!

73. Good for Congressman Clay and for us. We need to keep a list of Dems who
DO Stand up. Congressman Hinchey and 30 others asked Fitzgerald to handle the Impeachment trial in the Congress over the Niger forgeries. There are Dems other than the DINOs Hillary and what's his name who supposedly ran as the Democratic challenger in 2004.

IMPORTANT DLC HACKETT-ED ANOTHER REAL DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE!!!

=The DCCC works to defeat a Democrat
by cfinnie Thu Mar 30, 2006
That's right, on Tuesday, March 21, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the DCCC, won their first election--against another Democrat.

Washington knows best
They brought in the big guns. Hillary Clinton hosted a big-ticket fundraiser in New York. John Kerry sent out emails to raise more money. Barack Obama taped TV spots. By the end of the campaign, the Tammy Duckworth for Congress campaign had sent eleven different pieces of direct mail to voters in the 6th District in Illinois, covered the airwaves with commercials, and had spent close to $1,000,000....

Looks like the second progressive candidate to fail the Dem party 'sniff test'.

The Party is a lost cause
If they take your guy down, I would suggest he run as an Independent aka Jeffords and Sanders. The Dems need to be punished.

Until we can do that, they don't give a damn about us - the people. For 5 freakin years, the Dems have been afraid to have an opinion on anything. Now when illegals are about to blow the Pugs in half, here comes Teddy and the Dems supporting Bush's corporate welfare stance on the false pretence of supporting "civil rights". So instead of holding corporations accountable for all of their illegal hires, they are going to support amnesty. But Feingold says, hold Bush accountable - and they all run to the basement. Think about it.

The Dems are corporate owned just like the Pugs. If they take your guy down, he should run as an Independent. I think Cegelis should, too.

Patriot Party 08: Feingold, Murtha, Boxer, Harkin, Conyers, Kucinich, Sanders & Dean.

76. I think the point is that if the cause was worthy enough to send others,
one would think that one's own family would back the cause enough to do the same. It is a snipe about the urgency of the cause or lack there of among those who pushed for the war - not an argument to enlist others.

As bushco try to paint the Iraq war as on par with WWII (to try to deflect the Vietnam war comparisions) - they miss a big point. That war was broadly supported - millions enlisted willingly - including my father who left college to enlist. In that war, that they try to connect their current policies to, there was also wide public involvment and sacrifices to support the war effort; in this war we have been asked to sacrifice nothing, instead the most healed among us get tax breaks and get to pay less... leaving a larger and larger national debt that will have to be paid off in the future. I read Clay's words more from this point of view (in terms of point trying to be made) than from a "we want to try to get them to enlist."
