Some of the GM execs don't know why people buy them either. One of those dichotomys there...we build them...thanks suckers! The sentiment of this "entry" is probably closer to the GM attitude towards the SUV consumer than some would find comfortable.

I just purchased a 2007 Chevy Tahoe based on the fact that it runs on E85. It has a 25 gallon fuel tank and when I fill up, I'll only be putting about 4 gallons of actual gasoline in. The rest is Ethanol. I think that's pretty good, and good for the economy too.

The benefits of E85 are well documented here on DU and elsewhere.

Also: you're looking at the 2006 Tahoe. Not E85 compatible. Big difference.

2006 - estimated mpg highway = 15 mpg
2007 - estimated mpg highway = 21 mpg

I'm not defending big SUV's. I'm only pointing out that Chevy took some big steps forward with the new 2007 Chevy Tahoe.

The '06 was a pig (13 city/15 hwy). The '07 is somewhat better (15 city/21 hwy) using a displacement-on-demand feature that shuts off unneeded cylinders. Add its ability to burn a mostly-renewable fuel to the mix, and you've got a reasonably acceptable large truck if you need to schlep a lot of crap around. It's a whole lot better than those damned H2's...

I'm going to be proud to fill up my new Tahoe with E85!! Support the farmers! :)

I have a friend who loses about 2.5 mpg with her Explorer going to E85.

But I think the benefits of E85 outweight that. Even getting a couple miles less per gallon, I should STILL use less gas than I'm using now in my 2001 Impala.

And the fact that Ethanol is a renewable energy source that helps American farmers, well that to me is fantastic.

That means people will pay 25-40% more at the pump to the energy companies than they already do.

And, if the ethanol is "cooked" with coal, it cancels out the CO2 advantage.

Ethanol isn't a renewable fuel unless the production process also uses renewables. My understanding is that most of the ethanol plants being built today burn natural gas, and there are some coal-fired plants coming on line, as well.

E85 is hardly the renewable "green" fuel panacea you guys are making it out to be.

As far as I know, there are only a few ethanol fueling stations in CA and none anywhere close to where I live.

And one fairly close to where I work. I will make it a point to go there whenenver I fill up.
