Abortion Clinics On The 'Rez'????
Tribal leader rallies for abortion clinic on reservation
By Bill Harlan, Journal Staff Writer

Oglala Sioux Tribe President Cecelia Fire Thunder says a clinic on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation could provide abortions if South Dakota’s new abortion ban goes into effect.

“We’re working on it,” Fire Thunder said in a telephone interview Friday. “This is a free-choice issue. If I were in that situation, I’d want somewhere to go where I’d be taken care of.”

The new South Dakota law bans all abortions except to save the life of the mother — with no exceptions for rape or incest.

Fire Thunder said the state law would not apply to the reservation. “We’re a sovereign nation.

1. Can we just give the whole state back to the tribe?
They'd obviously do a much better job governing it.

3. I am showing that the Pine Ridge Reservation is basically
Shannon County, maybe 30-50 miles SSE of Rapid City and over 300 miles from Sioux Falls, where the current PP clinic is. That might work for the women of Rapid City area, but the women of Sioux Falls, Brookings, Yankton, Mitchell, etc. would be better served at Luverne, Mn.

5. There's been a few threads on this on DU - and I want to see
more! What a name (Fire Thunder) for a hell of a woman. You can donate, too, to help get this started.

I can't wait to hear/read what the anti-choicers have to say about this!
