Burt Bacharach unleashes his X-rated lyrics

Marilyn Beck and Stacy Jenel Smith

With the "explicit" version of his "Who Are These People?" song now hitting iTunes with his full approval, legendary songwriter Burt Bacharach is facing a fresh wave of controversy. This version of his anti-administration song features Elvis Costello wailing an expletive at the end.

Bacharach already won Grammy honors for his highly political "At This Time" album, which contains "Who Are These People?" However, the version of the song that went out on CD was "settling," says Bacharach, explaining that "there were mixed feelings in the record company (Columbia) about me, of all people, having something X-rated. "And the feeling was, 'You're already saying so much about your feelings, why keep the record out of Wal-Mart because of that line?' Not that it's in Wal-Mart."

He adds, "When I told Elvis, 'We're going to have to change it,' he was very upset because it's such a powerful moment. You've never heard that word like Elvis does it.' "

Bacharach insists the reason the second version is coming out now is that "things have gotten worse, with more lies, even in the last few weeks. People think we're doing it for sensationalism. No. I don't like to offend. My nature is to try to please everybody," says the septuagenarian music man, who reminds that all through the Vietnam War, he was writing love songs. "What's going on now caught me. I felt I had to say something."

1. And Alice Cooper SO adores him. (smirk)
How's that feel, Coop, to have someone you admire stab you in the back by declaring that they oppose everything you stand for? Hurts? It hurt me when you did it. Karma works whether you believe in it or not.

:applause: for Mr. Bacharach.

10. It won't happen as he continues to play golf with the enablers of
the neo cons

He should try playing at a public course for awhile

Who Are These People?

Lyrics by Burt Bacharach and Tonio K.

Who are these people that keep telling us lies
And how did these people get control of our lives
And who’ll stop the violence cause it’s out of control?
Make em stop

Who are these people that destroy everything
And sell off the future for whatever it brings
And what kind of leaders can’t admit when they’re wrong?
Make em stop

This stupid mess we’re in just keeps getting worse
So many people dying needlessly
Looks like the liars may inherit the earth
Even pretending to pray
And getting away with it

Who are these people that keep telling us lies
And how did these people get control of our lives
And who’ll stop the violence cause it’s out of control?
We’ve got to make them stop

Who are these people that keep telling us lies
And how did these people get control of our lives
and who’ll stop the violence cause it’s out of control?
Make em stop

See things really have to change
Before it’s too late

15. Tonio K?
Whoo hoo! I love Tonio K!

they put jesus on a cross, they put a hole in j.f.k.
they put hitler in the driver's seat and looked the other way
now they've got poison in the water and the whole world in a trance
but just because we're hypnotized, that don't mean we can't dance

we've got the funky
the funky western civilization
it's really spunky
it's just like summertime vacation
you just drag your partner through the dirt
leave him in a world of hurt...

19. I've been a fan of "H-A-T-R-E-D" since 1987.
He did a pretty good duet with Maria McKee, too!

was just a little too subtle for Bushco.

7. I saw him in concert just three weeks ago. He was here in my Red State
for three days and was SOLD OUT. There were older men in the audience with tears running down their face when Bacharach did his "Anti-Iraq Invasion" segment. There were other songs.

I thought people would walk out...but grown men with tears running down...The Vietnam Generation was there...and they understood.

The audience the night I was there looked like people 50 up to some in wheelchairs. It was awesome.

11. I got to talk to him after a show here in my red state town
It was a sold out crowd and after he played "Who Are These People?" there was a mixed reaction from the crowd (I live in shrub country). He had prefaced the song by talking about how he was afraid for his children's futures. When I met him, I thanked him for the message in the song and told him I thought the tide was turning and he thanked me for my comments and concern. I saw him about two weeks ago, the night after we bombed Iraq. He said watching the news last night really shook him up.

I don't think the crowd expected him to be so outspoken (I was one of the few people under the age of 50) but it was an nice surprise for me. :-)

I highly recommend "At This Time." It's just good music for one, and there are some great cameos: Elvis Costello, Rufus Wainwright, Chris Botti; even Dr Dre. Also he actually wrote a lot of the lyrics on this one, which is something he normally leaves for Hal David (David wrote most of the lyrics to Bacharach's music). He said at the show that it is the album he is most proud of (and he's got A LOT of albums). At least download "Who Are These People?" from iTunes. It's definitely worth the 99 cents!

21. For the record, Hal David's lyrics from "I say a little prayer for you"
were about the war in Viet Nam. So many girls/women at the time had a boyfriend or spouse in that war.

Mild stuff compared to this song though.

23. How bad a person are you when you got Burt Bacharach hatin' on you?
That's some kind of low. I'm starting to hope that GW lives a long life so he can get to see what his legacy will be.

What the world needs now are protest songs!
