PHOTOGRAPHIC PROOF NOW AVAILABLE Of Scalia's Obscene Gesture

Photographer: Herald got it right
By Marie Szaniszlo
Thursday, March 30, 2006 - Updated: 09:39 AM EST

Amid a growing national controversy about the gesture U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia made Sunday at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the freelance photographer who captured the moment has come forward with the picture.

Scalia’s flick-off

“It’s inaccurate and deceptive of him to say there was no vulgarity in the moment,” said Peter Smith, the Boston University assistant photojournalism professor who made the shot.

Despite Scalia’s insistence that the Sicilian gesture was not offensive and had been incorrectly characterized by the Herald as obscene, the photographer said the newspaper “got the story right.”

Smith said the jurist “immediately knew he’d made a mistake, and said, ‘You’re not going to print that, are you?’ ”

.................

“The judge paused for a second, then looked directly into my lens and said, ‘To my critics, I say, ‘Vaffanculo,’ ” punctuating the comment by flicking his right hand out from under his chin, Smith said.

The Italian phrase means “(expletive) you.”

http://news.bostonherald.com/localRegional/view.bg?articleid=132848

In other words, he didn't just make the sign for "fuck you" he said "fuck you." In church. What will we tell the children.

...My vast research into Sicilian obscenities reveals that while the word/sign is used as we would use "fuck you" or similar it actually means something along the lines of "go take it in the ass."

18. Here's the diagnosis from another DUer
"Plethoric. Cyanotic. Clubbed digits"

Wasn't refering to the fact that he has fingers with a large circumference. They are 'clubbed' at the end, which is a telltale sign of serious vascular disease.

Since you exercise, etc, I'm sure you're fine, but Fat Tony may not be one of those long-lived justices

5. Excuse me, but does this strike anyone else as ironic?
there is a "growing national controversy" over Scalia's hand gesture??? Isn't this the same man who single-handedly turned this country over to the neocons?

8. THIS is what Franken meant by "judicial demeanor"
http://www.thenation.com/blogs/thebeat?pid=39804

Prejudging cases, fraternizing with accused before the courts, allying yourself with partisan groups.

What is the procedure for impeaching a SC judge? I should think this would qualify for a misdemeanor...

10. Removal of SC judges
Every judge should be scrutinized for any thing that could cause their removal! If there is anything found in their lives that could throw any doubt on their honesty and ability as a jurist, it should be brought out!
The whole political program has to change or change will mean nothing!
This court is where this regime will be upheld without trials!

9. My Sicilian Landlord Said Scalia Is As Big An Asshole As Bush
We were discussing this last night, Scalia is seen as a fascist here in Sicily. Scalia is a Testa De Minchia (DICK HEAD). Here is a photo I took Tuesday off my porch. Yes that is Mt Etna!

13. Great shot.
And does your Sicilian landlord view the justice's hand gesture as an obscenity?

I know only Americans of Sicilian ancestry but they all said it was a very vulgar gesture even without narration.

There's a Pulitzer-winning shot. It takes a special kind of talent to take a pic exactly as you're being flicked off by a Supreme Court Justice, & this photographer has what it takes. I think that's hilarious.

31. Calling . . . okay, I won't name names.
But I recall someone posting here that the gesture was not obscene. Repeatedly posting that, despite the many opinions to the contrary from those of us who are/know/lived with Italians.

Who is Scalia trying to fool? Doesn't he realize he's not the only Italian-American around here?

34. We really have a great bunch of assholes governing, don't we?
We've known all along that Bush has total disrespect and ire for the American people. He gives them the finger, mouthes "F you" to protesters as he passes by.

Then we saw Cheney's true colors with vulgarities in the House. Again, showing utter disrespect and contempt for others.

Now Scalia.

None of these people are mature enough to be in the positions they are in. It's disgraceful. And they are making decisions that will affect our lives for many years to come.

And we wonder why things are so F'd up...
