Americans are being GOUGED by American Oil Cartel...
There is no other way of explaining it. Record profits for Exxon-Mobil and the price just keeps going up and up and up on the backs of Americans. Would any other president, other than our failed oil man faux-president, allow this to continue??? THIS IS SO BLATANT. Thank you for my mini-rant, now back to the previously scheduled program...

1. The oil's just running out.
Big Oil is just taking advantage of the high prices caused by peaking oil production rates and skyrocketing demand. Blaming Big Oil for all our trouble just blinds us to the real problem, the peaking of oil production.

2. But Americans deserve it.
To my fellow Americans: Stop using all that damn gas so you can have a mobile movie theatre for the insects in the back seat!

Seriously we need to conserve. We use too much.

4. Yes and no
Those of us who lived through the oil shocks of the 70s remember real gouging, and what's going on today is nothing like that, although it is painful for a people who haven't seen their indexed wages rise for decades. Since the profit margin on a gallon of gas is fixed, when that gallon starts to cost you more, an additional fraction of a cent from each gallon goes to profit, thus the record profits.

In fact, it can be argued that when you index to inflation, gas is cheaper now than it was in the 1950s.

I know that doesn't make it feel any better.

Get used to high prices and the fact that we will start to see shortages in another decade (or less, if the world situation worsens). Get used to the idea that oversized gas guzzling cars are dinosaurs.

The world is changing and Washington has its collective head up its ass, so we are the ones who will be stuck doing the changing. Paying higher prices per tank is the beginning. The end will be a complete reshaping of our society.

5. Notice how business isn't protesting? Truckers are not protesting.
Soccer moms are not protesting. Government comptrollers and their congresses are not protesting. Schools are not protesting. Airlines are not protesting. Vacationers are not protesting. Commuters are not protesting. So let the oil predators 'predate'.

I know, I know...predate is not a word - yet.

The word is we are all lambs.

It's only money that we might have spend unwisely. Might as well let the wife and children of the CEO's spend it unwisely.
