1. Welcome to the facist state
We know what is good for you, you know. You must obey!!!!

OTOH, this is Chickasaw OK, which means it is probably on a reservation. For many Native Americans, tobacco is sacred and part of their religion, though I guess dip would be hard to use in tobacco ties. :)

Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 02:24 PM by OKNancy
We have lots of towns with Indian names, but no reservations

16. Correction, the Osage Reservation is the only reservation in Oklahoma
From the Osage Nation's website

Modern Osages

The Osage Nation is a federally recognized Indian nation and occupies the Osage Reservation in north-central Oklahoma. The Osage Nation consists of approximately 18,000 Osage citizens with an estimated 4,000 residing on the Reservation. The BIA estimates, according to its labor force report, that there are an additional 6,500 other Indians residing on the Reservation. The Indian Health Service estimates that the IHS Pawhuska Health Center provides ambulatory care for 10,000 Indians.

The Reservation contains 1,469,240 acres or 2,296 square miles. The Osage Nation in 1870, purchased the Reservation and is the only federally recognized Reservation remaining in Oklahoma. The capital of the Osage Nation is in Pawhuska, Oklahoma. The principal Reservation communities of the Osage Nation are at Hominy, Fairfax, Pawhuska, and Skiatook.

19. Yes, I know, but it's still not like what the poster
was thinking. There is no place exclusively populated by Indians. On Osage land, you can't tell the difference from any other county in Oklahoma. You can drive from Tulsa to Pawhuska and think it's just another drive. Think of the phrase "You have been assimilated"

21. LOL, I know what you mean
When I'm in Oklahoma I'm usually in the central part because that's where my immediate family lives (Edmond, OKC, El Reno and Bethany). When I can I go visit my Indian relatives in Cheyenne-Arapaho country out west.

But officially, there is one reservation in Oklahoma.

26. It just started raining in the last 10 minutes
Looks like I'm in for the rest of the day. Oh well, the house scraping is ahead of schedule. Hopefully this will knock off some of the paint we've loosened up. :eyes: MuseRider lives west of me and said she was preparing for a second onslaught a while ago.

We're starting to get some lightning. We're watching the weather closely because of the surprise microburst a couple of weeks ago (that we're still cleaning up from).

Just checked radar, the red and purple stuff is just on the edge of town and moving this way. :yoiks:

23. that's funny
Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 03:42 PM by ayeshahaqqiqa
because I have a friend who is working on the Choctaw reservation in southeast OK as we speak-he's an engineer who is helping them build houses.

Edited to say that though there may be one recognized reservation, apparently the Choctaw still call the land near their governmental headquarters a reservation.

8. Actually the town's name is Chickasha, the -tribe- of similar name
is the Chickasaw. It's strange but we have other examples, like the town Muskogee and the tribe Muscogee. And actually there are no reservations in Oklahoma, in the typical sense at least.

18. There's a difference
between ceremonial tobacco and regular smoking tobacco. I've still got some my mom's ceremonial tobacco. It was made from buffalo tallow, sumac and tobacco. It is very, very moist even after 9 years.

3. Under BushCo, it seems that police are getting a bit heavy-handed
Reminds me of the Nixon era.

They really need to check themselves, I think. It took years and years for them to morph from "pigs" to Officer Friendlies...and they aren't helping much with this kind of nonsense. A word to a parent, and perhaps confiscation of the offending tin, might have sufficed.

4. Arrested for chewing tobacco??
I went to high school in Cherokee, OK. Most boys I knew chewed.

This is completely stupid.

5. It's against the law for minors to have tobacco
I spent one year in hell teaching high school history in Newcastle Oklahoma in 1974. The boys spit on the floor! It was disgusting. I changed careers after that year. lol

7. They carried cups around when I was in high school.
Teachers never said much.

This was a farming community and chewing was the norm for most guys.

Sure, it's illegal for minors, but I've never heard of anyone getting arrested over it.

before half his face gets removed due to lip, tongue, and jaw cancer.

I hate to see kids that young get started.

17. That's naive
Chewing tobacco is widely accepted. Many adults in communities like these will allow their kids to chew tobacco. Some consider it far better than smoking.

My hubby started chewing when he was 14 years old. His parents always knew about it. He did it for years up until about 8 years ago when his brother died from sudden cardiac death. Getting arrested wouldn't have stopped him, but his brother's death did.

20. I know, but I can dream
Hell, I'd rather they chew it than smoke it. Spit is disgusting, but smoke makes me deathly sick.

I'm glad your hubby was able to quit.

and we wouldn't allow it. Hubby wouldn't want him to take it up at all. It was really hard for him to quit, too.

6. Geez, what insanity
Hell, they could probably arrest half the highschool population for this:eyes:

What's even scarier is that they apparently did this to twelve kids last year, and have already arrested four this year.

Perhaps this is the new revenue generator down in OK.

9. Wow, proves that the Chicksha police force
is out there fighting crime. Wonder what their numbers are for meth labs. Oops, sorry, some of those meth labs are really dngerous place to be.Better to target snuff users. More lucrative too. For other poster, Chickasha is not on a reservation , as I remember. Some Indian names used for towns in OK. Tecumseh and Seminole among them. But one of my brothers was born on the Bigheart ,sic?, Indian Reservation. The name was later changed, as I remember hearing about from family members.

15. When cops arrest kids for that, it's usually because the kids are trouble
When kids are being obnoxious, or they've been told to give up the cigarettes and they refuse, cops will arrest and ticket kids for possession of tobacco. The lesson is that it is easier to give it up when asked then to pay fines.

I had a cousin who was at a party where alcohol was being served and all the kids were underage. When the cops showed up, they asked each kid if he had been drinking. They all lied except my cousin, who said he had a couple of beers. They all got tickets, except my cousin, because, as the cops told the rest of them, he didn't lie about it.
