2. And if she came home without a head, in a sack, they'd make her a martyr
Those fuckers have no shame. Nothing is out of bounds to them. Anything, any lie, any excess, to make their sick, twisted points.

4. You knew this was coming...
Jill C is of NO assistance to the administration and their goal to "elevate the propaganda". She reports the truth. I hate to say it, but they probably were hoping she didn't make it out! She was more useful to them dead than alive....

Pitiful!

5. Here's what Podhoretz said
"It’s wonderful that she’s free, but after watching someone who was a hostage for three months say on television she was well-treated because she wasn’t beaten or killed — while being dressed in the garb of a modest Muslim woman rather than the non-Muslim woman she actually is — I expect there will be some Stockholm Syndrome talk in the coming days."

Bastard.

7. Podhoretz Sinks To His Usual Level, Sir
In her work, moving among the people of the place, doubtless she adopted such garb as easing her passage.

People relieved from dire straits, particularly people of grit and character, tenmd always to downplay what has occured to them, particularly when they are well aware much worse could have easily befallen them.

12. Adopting a burka would enable one to move around attracting
minimal attention. If I were working in that country, I would definitely wear a burkha. Her wardrobe has nothing to do with irritating Rush and everything to do with trying to stay alive long enough to do her job.

16. Burqas are not common in Iraq
but the hijab is. Burqas are more common in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

19. Other RW comments
Having read and heard reports about Jill Carroll's work in Iraq, I know that she wanted to IMMERSE herself in the culture of Iraq. She also spoke Arabic fluently and was a friend to many local Iraqis. Why would her garb be so strange to her detractors? She wore the traditional garb even before her kidnapping.

About a year before the current Iraq war began, my mother applied for work with the defense department in the Middle East. They could have sent her to Iraq or Saudi Arabia, it was her choice. She was advised though, that when she left the US gov't compound, she would have to wear a burka and keep her body covered from wrist to ankle. They said that was necessary for western women there.

After perusing some of the RW sites this afternoon (don't fuss, I like to see what they are saying), these are the main comments:

1. The timing: Complaints that the MSM is overlooking the fact that two of the "peaceniks" were rescued only a few weeks ago. Could it be that Jill's captors became frightened after that rescue, and so let her go? So credit must be given to the coalition army.

2. Ransom: Many are saying that since she was released, not rescued, that means a large ransom was probably paid. Seems that many insurgent groups finance their insurgency (they say terrorist/terrorism) by attaining ransoms from kidnapings. HOW MANY AMERICAN SOLDIERS WILL DIE due to the ransom money paid for Jill? (Barf)

3. She was treated well: "Her interpreter, killed during the kidnapping, was not available for comment."

4. And, of course, she planned it or was in on it....yada, yada, yada.

Reminds me of the Salem Witch Trials in the early days of Amurka....if the church accused you of being a witch, you could choose the trial-by-water....they tied your hands and feet and threw you into the lake. If you lived, that proved you were a witch...if you sank and drowned, then you were vindicated!

religious beliefs by their dress. Why would this be his business?

I would imagine if they took him prisoner, and his own clothes had to be replaced over the MONTHS, they'd probably have to scare up a circus tent for him to wear during his trip back home.

he says 'a ransom may have been paid.'
there is not a shred of evidence to suggest that.
the christian science monitor says it didn't happen.

15. i do know that she was well respected
by the people she worked with and the iraqi people she meant in everyday life. she wore what she did out of respect for the people and their culture. who ever kidnapped her must have realized they had more to lose than to gain by killing her or someone told them to release her. i`m sure we will never know the truth and neither will she nor the people she works with.
all in all it`s been a great day for lady journalists--helen gets flowers and jill gets released

18. Why is it always women?
They attack, smear, denigrate and threaten everyone who doesn't share their twisted world view.

But they save their most acidic, vile and shocking criticisms for women. Hillary, Helen Thomas, Cindy Sheehan, Barbara Streisand, The Dixie Chicks.... etc, etc....

By their extreme misogynism shall ye know them.

21. I've heard supposed "antiWar" folk attacking her
sayign that she didn't do anything for the iraqi people and was only looking to get rich and famouse.

As non sensical as that is. Like she couldn't get money without risking kidnappings and death.
