Here are the first few pics, still working on them.

First, thanks to Rainer for all he did. We would have been lost without him.

17. When you can do good you should!
Fantastic!

The rose is a rose,
And was always a rose.
But now the theory goes
That the apple's a rose,
And the pear is, and so's
The plum, I suppose.
The dear only knows
What will next prove a rose.
You, of course, are a rose--
But were always a rose.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=798595&mesg_id=799029

To Rainer and Cindy
Who have brought flowers of peace into my life. My deepest gratitude. We will never give up on a better world. You both are great to represent all the good people in the world.

Helen Thomas
March 30, 2006

Which is not to say that DU was in anyway overlooked, but that sign is Rainer and I's anti-war sign. We made it in Sept. 2001, and carry it at every anti-war protest we attend - and we've been to many. Just so everyone knows that Helen addressing it to Rainer and myself is not a diss to DU and this event.

Does that make sense? Is that okay with everyone? It's been a long day for me.

Hugs,
Cindy in Fort Lauderdale

55. It's okay with me.
I'm so jealous that he was there....I posted in another thread that I thought about flying to DC to be there to help arrange and to see her face and decided to be practical instead and not spend the money. (Someday I'll learn to trust my instincts.)

It sounds like he was there through your connection so it's only fitting. It's also a great sign and it will be even more powerful with her comments. I only hope you can cover it with transparent tape or something to protect it. Would hate to see her comments get blurred by rain or something else.

that. Rainer asked her to sign it, but I don't think he expected her to inscribe it.

Edited on Thu Mar-30-06 11:07 PM by BrightKnight
Putting a mega-flame suit on.
-------
I don't have a problem with the message but the context is not exactly correct.

It is a bit over the top and it detracts from the roses. I suspect that most of the people that sent roses wanted to show their appreciation for Helen Thomas. Waving an anti-war protest sign around her office wasn't doing her any favors. Her response was very gracious but I would not make a big deal out of it.

The real story here is that so many people sent roses to a beautiful person. Everybody knows what she stands for.

33. Rainer is overwhelmed
I just got off of the phone with him, again. He took his shoes off and said he felt like he took his feet off! :-)

He's not very computer savvy and I had to urge him to come to DU and look at the pics by e-mailing him links. He said he didn't want to see the pics until he'd heard my comments about them. So I told him about the pics you and GOPFighter have posted and my comments. (Helen looks so happy! Look, Rainer it's you! Everyone knows you on DU now! You're a hero!)

He just now agreed to take a look at the links to threads I've sent him and has promised to register and post a comment or two - but truly, he's being rather shy right now (very unlike him). I told him to call me back if he had any problem registering and posting. Until today he didn't understand what a Blog was Chris (?) explained it to him, but he still thinks DU is a Blog.

Anyway, thanks everyone. Today was a good day.

62. He registered to post - but this is what he had to say tonite
But has to wait 24 hours.

I spoke with him on the phone and posted his comments in the ROSES BRIGADE APPRECIATION THREAD here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=799435&mesg_id=800567

But, anyway, here is what he said to me:

I want to say thank you, from deep in my heart, it does so much good from here in DC. There are so many black-hearted Republicans and pessimists and people who will just ignore politics and the world around them. I often feel very alone, save my lifeline, Cindy. Because it was her that brought my attention to this. My political marching buddy. Who hooked me up with helderheid. Being a beginner in computers I had no idea of the overwhelming attention and support that this day involved until after I came home. So great to work with people who are willing to work for nothing except the better of humankind. And a woman who speaks the voice that is not commonly heard today in America, but greatly felt.

That was enough to make me feel good. To see and read all these wonderful responses. And that so many people cared enough to take care of a parking ticket. That alone, was enough to move me to tears.

As Ghandi said, "Good will prevail in the end."

The sign reads, "Wisdom not War", to all of those who read this here, you have a welcome sign, If you see the sign, know you have a friend.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

And thank you for letting me be a part of this.

Look forward to celebrating with you all when this damn war is over and our and troops are home.

Rainer

From Reply #83 in Thread #6:

She signed our anti-war sign (Wisdom Not War - we carry that at all the anti-war protests we go to) and wrote this on the sign:

"To Rainer and Cindy

One of the things that Helen kept mentioning was all of the hate email she gets. The emails are mostly from men, and they call her all sorts of vile names. I'm sure that all positive email to her is welcomed. She is so loved and hated at the same time.

Anyway, what does 100 dozen roses look like?

but damn. Just damn. She really deserves these roses! Did she have a fabric rose on her dusty pink colored top? Y'all matched! Love the pink! Love the roses! :)

Helen,

I wasn't able to donate myself (missed the deadline) for the roses, but I just wanted to tell you that we all love you at DU!!!

Enjoy the roses, it's the least we could do for you !

66. I'm sure that she knew that something was going on
We were in the conference room all day, and the conference room had a glass wall. Seemed that everybody in the office walked by, several times every hour. But Helen never walked by. I think that all wondered what was going on, and hoping it was for them.

67. We did have a brief discussion about saving all of the thorns......
and sending the thorns to *. Somehow that would have been fitting, Helen gets the roses and * gets the thorns. Unfortunately, we ran out of time.

I printed out all the threads about the days events (I want to save them and put them in a binder) - took about 2/3 of a ream of paper!

Go DU!
