11. Dean's comments have hit the wires!
Nixon aide: Bush wiretaps exceed Watergate crimes

By LAURIE KELLMAN
Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - Nixon White House counselor John Dean, testifying in behalf of a Democratic resolution to censure President Bush, asserted Friday that Bush's conduct in connection with domestic spying exceeds the wrongdoing that toppled his former boss from power.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, fired back by telling Democrats: "Quit trying to score political points."

The Senate, Dean said, should censure or officially scold Bush as proposed by Sen. Russell Feingold's resolution. But if that action carries too much political baggage, some senatorial warning is in order, Dean said.

"The resolution should be amended, not defeated, because the president needs to be reminded that separation of powers does not mean an isolation of powers," Dean said in prepared remarks. "He needs to be told he cannot simply ignore a law with no consequences."

29. Interesting . . .
Both Specter and Leahy are only questioning Fein and Dean. They are ignoring the witnesses on the Republican point of view, as if they really don't have anything to say worth reviewing or questioning. To me this is a subtle point -- the only witnesses have details that need to be reviewed are those in favor of censure.

75. We've all been tapping our foot on that one!
Phone numbers above...they're all shirking their duty (except Leahy and Feingold). Even Kennedy's office said "Not all Democrats agree with Senator Feingold" :wow:

79. What I want to ask the Judiciary Comittee witnesses:
Is it theoretically possible that a president .. any president .. can use his authority to create a classified program with a perfectly legitimate-sounding facade, but is really used in a bad way?

not whether THIS president is. whether it's theoretically possible to do so.

If so---

Who is the check on that power? Who is supposed to stop it?

And given the evidence, can we count the ways in which this president can be shown to be acting completely on the up-and-up?

Once you admit it's possible, it's very hard to refute that it's not happening.
