John Dean Blasts Warrantless Eavesdropping

By LAURIE KELLMAN, Associated Press Writer
30 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Nixon White House counselor John Dean, testifying in favor of a Democratic resolution to censure President Bush, asserted Friday that Bush's conduct in connection with domestic spying exceeds the wrongdoing that toppled his former boss from power.

Sen. Orrin Hatch (news, bio, voting record), R-Utah, fired back by telling Democrats: "Quit trying to score political points."

The Senate, Dean said, should censure or officially scold Bush as proposed by Sen. Russell Feingold's resolution. But if that action carries too much political baggage, some senatorial warning is in order, Dean said.

"To me, this is not really and should not be a partisan question," Dean told the panel. "I think it's a question of institutional pride of this body, of the Congress of the United States."

"The resolution should be amended, not defeated, because the president needs to be reminded that separation of powers does not mean an isolation of powers," Dean said in prepared remarks. "He needs to be told he cannot simply ignore a law with no consequences."

4. Congress declares itself as non-independent branch of government
"To me, this is not really and should not be a partisan question," Dean told the panel. "I think it's a question of institutional pride of this body, of the Congress of the United States."

Why don't republicans and dems in congress realize the are declaring themselves to be an utterly subservient meaningless branch of government

6. Why? That's easy. For the money.
And the repugs probably have damaging info on every one of those absent Senate wimps.

5. This is good - and getting more attention on the DEBATE about Bush's
actions was a clear goal of Feingold's to begin with - so, in that sense, he scored no matter what.

7. I agree ~ most people won't hear the ridiculous nonsense spouted
by anti-American Republicans, or the cowardly MIA Democrats. They'll learn that there was a censure hearing against this president, and that's very negative, and could not have happened even a year ago.
