Scalia photog fired, like everybody who stands up to rethugs
A freelance photographer has been fired by the Archdiocese of Boston’s newspaper for releasing a picture of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia making a controversial gesture in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross on Sunday.

Peter Smith, who had freelanced for The Pilot newspaper for a decade, lost the job yesterday after the Herald ran his photo on its front page. Smith said he has no regrets about releasing it. “I did the right thing. I did the ethical thing,” said Smith, 51, an assistant photojournalism professor at Boston University.

Smith snapped the photo of Scalia flicking his hand under his chin after a Herald reporter asked the conservative jurist his response to people who question his impartiality on matters of church and state.

Smith wouldn’t give up the photo earlier this week but chose to release it when he learned Scalia said his gesture had been incorrectly characterized by the Herald. Smith, who was standing in front of the judge, said the Herald “got the story right.”

Now the diocese is claiming there's "no proof" of the obscenity. Which is a bit different than denying it happened. The usual Repuke "you can't PROOOOOVE it" crap.

7. i guess the catholic church does not believe in freedom of the
press. it was a known fact in new york that certain churches in certain neighborhoods were kept afloat because of mob contributions. :eyes:

8. The Archdiocese of Boston strikes again.
I hope they are finally forced to sell everything they have.

What happened? Did they finally run out of altar boys to release all of their pent-up frustration?

Bastards.

9. ANY journalist
who introduces controversy in a diocesan newspaper(which is more a community booster with enforced subscription than any legitimate journalism to start with) is liable to be disappeared. That is the nature of the beast.

Because of the centralized Church control of the papers, one might phone in and ask if the bishop was thinking of censuring a prominent Church member for a public disgrace outside a Church. Such a phone call would bring out the smelling salts, the lawyers and the phone number of the newspaper editors. And the need to take a vacation or retreat in some distant undisclosed location.

The journalist in question should not be hurt career-wise for being a genuine journalist- and dumped- in this situation, but in America are the other newspapers with corporate ownership much better?

The real issue is whether Scalia is showing signs of disease or dementia beyond that of simple moral decay.

16. He didn't do any such thing
"ANY journalist who introduces controversy in a diocesan newspaper(which is more a community booster with enforced subscription than any legitimate journalism to start with) is liable to be disappeared."

He released the photo to the Herald, and the Herald printed it. Didn't involve the Church's paper at all.

17. Well, the Diocese paper refused to run it
As is their right, I guess. But punishing people for getting the news out is ridiculous. No true editor would sit on a story like that. Only a propagandist would. Which, I think, is what that paper is. Scalia in essence called the photographer and the Herald liars. It was the editor's duty to protect his people and the truth. He failed miserably.

21. Thank you for the correction
The impression had been given that some Catholic editor had temporarily taken leave of his senses. This is a lot more ordinary situation then. It is not so bad to be blacklisted from a bunch of booster journals with enforced circulation.

10. Pete Smith with another comedy short.
I hate to reveal my age, but there was a fellow named Pete Smith who years ago did comedy short films for movie theaters. I glad that his namesake has continued the tradition by presenting Scalia and his actions for public ridicule. I have certainly had tons of fun with it, and I think that there are other jobs that he can fill in the future.

Does anyone else remember those short films?

11. Archdiocese of Boston - should be renamed to Archdiocese of Coverups.
for the way they handled the child abuse scandal. Now they were trying to cover this up. If anything they should kick Fat Tony out of the church for making such a gesture in a Holy place. Good to see more & more people standing up to these fascist. Has this made any of the media yet?

Some people actually worship the guy - Check out this site - 'Cult of Scalia' At first I thought it was an anti-scalia site - but boy, was I wrong http://members.aol.com/schwenkler/scalia/

13. This is standard procedure for Repugs
Fire anyone who's witness to their repugnant behavior. Looks like the Catholic church is in on the game now. Given the state they're in, it's not surprising.

14. You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free--Jesus
What part of their reputed leader's words does the Catholic Church of Boston not understand? The picture pretty well nailed Fat Tony for his bad behavior and conduct unbecoming a jurist- American, Italian, or whatever. (No thanks to the Archbishop, Cardinal, Pilot, and the rest of them.)

18. Sorry, didn't see KPete had posted same story
I checked, but it must have slid off the page before I logged on. Oh, well, kept the topic alive at least. This is outrageous, and I hope Mr. Smith finds a new and better position.

19. This is what the editor said...
“It’s nothing personal,” added Pilot editor Antonio Enrique. “I need to try and find people I can trust.” Sounds a lot like *'s hiring practices. Loyalty based, not skill based. And such compassion and forgiveness coming from a church. :eyes: Yeah, right. Makes me feel a lot less guilty for not attending anymore.

20. This type of stuff needs to stop.
These type of right-wing jerks like Scalia really need to be stood up to, because they are ruining our country every single day, and are nothing more than bullies.Otherwise, we are truly sliding down that slope towards full blown fascism.
